Hi i have been bought a 35 gallon tank for my birthday and am in the process of cycling it. I bought after a week a couple of goramis and some tetras along with a pair of swordtails.
The swordtails are still with me and 2 out of the three tetras but i lost both of the goramis. My Ph is static at 7.4/7.5 and everything else seems ok although the ammonia is showing 0.25 so the waterchange should sort that. I have read a lot in the last few weeks and my question is, am i right in thinking that most community fish will tolerate a static 7.4 ph and if so what fish do i really need to avoid. I dont really want to mess with the ph or at least not till i have more experience with what i am doing.

Avoid anything that will grow too big for your tank, anything that will kill or eat your other fish and anything that prefers very low PH, although yours isn't extremely high so most fish will tolerate it. Have a look at the type of fish you like and do a little research on them to find out their potential size, habits and other needs then decide what to go for. Probably best to avoid anything expensive at first.

For the good of the fish and also for the best look, it's difficult, but best to stick to larger numbers of fewer different species. Especially with a small tank, you want everything and it can be tempting to get 2 of these and 1 of these kind of thing. But a shoal of 6 or more of one species will look lovely and behave more naturally :)
