hgih fin loach

anyone ever heard of a high fin loach? saw some at the lfs near my in laws and they are really cool. were marked as south american.

this one is quite larger than the clown loach, is black and white blotched almost like stripes and the dorsal fin is really high like a sail. alot larger than the clown loach and alot more pricier. thought of getting some for my 180. pretty fish also.

If it's what I'm thinking of they come from China, like cooler water and grow pretty big (12"+) and like their own company. They also like a bit of a current.. B)

Hi Maggie,

I believe it is Myscoyprinus Asiaticus - I've been looking out for them myself for the last year or so, never seen any in UK, I think you guys (and Gals) over there have a bit more variety than we do. Snap them up if you can, they look great!!

I have been doing a web search for these darn things and came up blank.

They also go by freshwater bat fish. Greenwoods has them occasionally.

That is pricey but oh my god such cool fish!! I want I want!!! Try and breed them as much as possible and maybe ship them over to the uk

these little guys are so cool. I just reserved the five that were left at the store. the information i get is that they like alot of current, like a very clean environment (darn! daily water changes!), are susceptible to high nitrates and like to clown. i am going to set up a 55 gal tank for them with sand, two powerheads and lots of plants. says they like to climb the walls of the tank or plants that cover the surface of the water till they are upside down and then float like that to the bottom. they like bloodworms and mostly eat goldfish flake food. also like a ph of about 7.0. they are slow growers but can reach lengths of up to 3' with their top fin at 2'. are very peaceful but should not be kept with fin nippers. also are endangered in china. hard to breed but will lay eggs in excess of 50,000! the males grow tubercles on the mouths and fins when matured. looks like a job for cichlidmaster! heehee.

Sounds Cool, tank sounds great. Glad you got more info. I should have an article featuring them in an old copy of Practical Fishkeeping, will let you know what I find out.

At my reckoning you spent 5X$30 = $150 on fish that just about uses up the budget your husband left you while he went after some deer I believe? Well spent, could be a good investment if you get 50,000 eggs

the damn 55 leaks though. just tried to fill it. guess i know what i have to do this weekend. going to go with a 40 gallon high for the time being. the fish are only about 2.5" long each right now.
