Hey im new to fish, and have never had fish other then a betta, and once a goldfish. Anyway that was years ago. I wanna get into it because i have a 10 gallon tank that one of my reptiles grew out of, and i wanna try somthing new. Im mainly a reptile person, snakes and lizards are my thing, but im interested in learning about fish :) and i think it would look nice in my room with my reptile collection. Ok im not starting out with anything to large because this is my first attempt, and i already have this :) Like i said im new to this, and have done some research but its alot easier to understand when its personal and i can ask questions. So what i want is if anyone can recomend fish, how many fish can i get into a 10gallon, i know some say each inch needs one gallon, but i know what people say isnt always true because i hear what people say about snakes and lizards and its far off, and people just want to make money so they will tell you anything. I would love pictures of some 10gallon setups for some ideas :) THANKS Alot

Ken

Welcome aboard. I am fairly new as well, and the 1" of fish per gallon is right. When you have fish, they are constantly releasing ammonia into the water through their waste as well as their gills. If you over stock, you will end up with too much waste which will poison your fish.

Like I said I am also fairly new and am learning some important lessons the hard way. I jumped into getting fish right away, and ended up losing half of them because I went over the fish stocking rule. Didn't know about it until later in the game. You are also not suppose to buy all the fish at once. Buy a few at a time and introduce new fish every few weeks. That way the waste released won't overpower the bacteria in your filter.

Read up on some of the pinned topics about cycling. I didn't know about it when I started and now I am doing 50% water changes 2X a day. You don't want to end up like me. It is a lot of hard work.

I have guppies, platys, and a betta. They school together in the tank and come in lots of different colours and sizes. They are also very active fish. I am also getting my other tank ready to have dwarf puffers. They are entertaining and ,like the betta, are said to recognize their owners and have quirky personalities. Check your local fish stores to see what they have and which kinds of fish can go together. More aggressive fish are barbs, and I think chilids. Check around and see what is available, and also check out the quality of all their fish while you are there. I've seen lots of fish for sale that have very visible ick, or lots of dead fish in the tanks.

There are some very good people on this site who will give you advice and lead you in the right direction. I am just giving you a heads up to some lessons I've learned already with the help of this forum.

Hi, welcopme to the forums! I also have a ten gallon. I have four bronz corriedoras catfish in it. I'm thinking of adding one or two more. Two of them are albino. They are a good biginner fish and are quite hardy. They are not the most pretty fish, but they are fun to watch and they have distinkt little personalities. They grow to be between two and three inches long. They are a schooling fish so if you get them get a few. There is also a dwarf veriaty. You could ave a few of them and a school of some other small fish. I think one inch of fish per gallon is a good rule of thumb, but as you said it is not a finite rule. I laso ended up loosing some of my fish at first because I overstalked. The first few months of fish keeping can be hard, but this forum is very helpfull.
You may want to make sure your reptile tank it strong enough to hold in the water. 10 gallons of water waighs about 100 lbs. There is a pinned topic in this section that lists all of the things you can put in a ten gallon. I found it very helpfull.

Hi welcome to the forum and fish keeping :)

Here is a list of a lot of pinned topics that you will find useful, including, how to set up an aquarium, advice on fishless cycling, species index etc, have a good read though, they are very informative and will help you with the first few questions you will undoubtedly have.
