My family thinks I'm crazy too! "Why would you want to invest so much time into something that you can't snuggle with?"... but you don't have to snuggle to feel the love and accomplishment!

Heh, my girlfriend thought I was weird when I said I wanted to have a fish tank.
 
A month later, she loves them!!
She now want her own shrimp and snails tank!! 

 
People only think its weird when they do not know how much pleasure just watching a well stocked and cared for aquarium can give you.

Also, there are so many aspects to the hobby; from keeping a small community well, to planted tanks, fish only marines or reef tanks, invertebrates (fresh and marine), Central and South American and African cichlids, breeding (even of rare and endangered species!); amazing really, and can be done in almost anyone's living room!

When I was a kid, I begged my parents to take me to the city aquarium constantly.  Floating with a snorkel over a coral reef watching the plants and animals is like the coolest experience in the world.  A well designed healthy home aquarium is a piece of living art.
 
You're not weird.  It's the folks who don't understand the peace and beauty of the underwater world who are missing out.
