I have only been a member on this site 2 weeks and I thought I should introduce myself...
I am Livvie, a student from South Wales. I have an interest in animal care, I have lots of animals!
My own pets are... a 48L tropical aquarium, 5 pet rabbits (I breed lionheads and mini lops - as a hobby, not for the money) and 2 fancy goldfish. We also have 4 dogs, 1 collie and 3 springer spaniels. My brother also has 5 pet snakes. I wanna do something to do animals in the future like vet nursing, small animal rescue/rehabilitation and eventually start my own business.

So that's pretty much it and thanks to everyone for answering some questions I have put on this forum and I try to do my best to answer other people's questions too!

Heya, nice to meet you. I love south wales, have family there and regularly visit the Gower

Whats in your 48L? The goldfish?

there are some beautiful places in south wales, i like going to tenby in the summer, mmmm... whippy ice creams with a flake and stawberry sauce :) The goldfish are in a pond and I have guppies and a dwarf gourami and a couple danios in the 48L

Hi Livvie, glad you joined us.

Collies and Spaniels are such pretty dogs! One of my dogs is a cocker spaniel mix, she's got a great alarm bark. I can imagine how it must be when all of yours start up! :)

Yeah the spaniels are MAD! I swear they never run out of energy, lovely people dogs though :) our youngest one is actually the offspring of the other two. We bred them (they had 10 puppies!) and at about five weeks old we realised one of the pups wasn't right. By six weeks old we figured out he was born blind :( anyway, we decided to keep him and after a few months we got an appointment at the eye specialist vets. It turns out both parents carry a recessive gene (no way we could have known) and when they "come together" it creates this blindness gene. There is no way to fix it but he is a completely healthy, happy and completely mad springer spaniel and we all love him to bits. We had the parents neutered because its not fair breeding dogs that produce blind puppies. The blind one turns 2 in a few days :)

Haha. Our spaniel just passed away, but he was always sleeping :p Mine was deaf and blind, and his teeth were rotting, he had bad hips, arthiritis, anxiety, and his bladder was bad so he had a 3-1 week urinary tract infection medicine. We called him the crack dog. :D

Sorry for your loss, sounds like you knew it was his time to go soon :( we had a cat like that and we got him put down because it was kinder than watching him waste away when he couldn't eat because his teeth were rotting (plus all the other problems). That was years ago though, we don't have any cats now (I think we have enough animals!)

That was very responsible of you and your parents to neuter the dogs after finding out about that gene! Will their blind pup get a little present on his birthday?

I know of a lady in Germany who adopted a dog from Spain. That little one had been a homeless dog and someone did not like her begging for food so they threw acid into her face. It made her blind, and caused glaucoma in her eyes. The German lady adopted her knowing that there will be quite a few vet-bills in her future!
The pressure in her eyes eventually build up so badly that the eye-drops could no longer help and to spare her the pain caused by the pressure inside the eye they first removed one, then a couple of months later the other. This dog is doing remarkably well, even runs on the grass and plays with other dogs. People could learn a lot by watching animals, there is no self pity, they adjust and find happiness where ever they can! :)

I love hearing stories where the animal is rescued and has a happy ending for them. I agree that animals just wanna find happiness and if you get a bad dog it's usually because its been mistreated.

We also got the blind one neutered because it wouldn't be fair to have him passing on any blindness genes. The vet said he hasn't seen a dog with eyes as bad as our dog for 8 years! But he said the dog's eyes do not cause any pain for him and that there shouldn't be any more problems in the future, relating to his eyes. He really doesn't know he's blind though, he's a total nutter!
