(heterandria Formosa)

Phew, that was a near miss, Gill. I'm glad you realised in time and that they're ok!

Btw these are the original colour form heterandrias, not the golden morph. I know because I bought the other two pairs. And very lovely little fish they are, with a reddish spot on their dorsals.

I was watching one of the males last night and I swear he was using his gonopodium to scratch his chin. Gross!

Just because these are the normal colour, it doesn't mean that they wont throw out a few golden coloured morphs (I don't think that all of them are golden colour) so keep a close eye on them.

Gill are you referring to Brian's cube being the ones he sells at the show? Are you sure the hets will be OK in a small tank like that as I thought they were show tanks. I would not put them in any less than a 12x8x8; but that is just me. I don't have great experience or success with this species.

Yeah the males are a little creepy to watch, they just stare at you and skulk around the bowl. If they throw out any Golds then Cool.
Not Noticed any red spots on the dorsal yet.

Yeah, the ones from the show for 3.60 each. There just in the small cubes ATM till the weekend when i can move them into Aquacandy Tanks that I have Lying around. That Way i can use the Hydor Credit Card heaters i have and put them under the sand. and they can have mroe swimming space.

My Wife Looked at the little cube and said, you have fish that small now, Yep - Your Mad

Going to be so busy tommorrow, have 3 fish parcels and light units arriving tommorrow.

It is possibly due to the trials and tribulations they have been put through over the last few days.

Hets practice superfetation which means that they have a number of broods at different stages of gestation at the same time so you should get a few fry every few days. Feeding them will be a problem as they are so small. You can try crushed flake or liquifry 1 but they will do best with Artemia nauplii (newly hatched brine shrimp).

If you are feeding liquifry etc then you should be very careful not to pollute the tank especially as they are in a one litre aquarium.

Regards,

Duncan.

Thanks duncan,

I asked Derek and he said the same thing.
I will leave them alone for a few days and just add some new hatched daphnia from my outdoor culture and some larger ones for the M/F

Some New Pix.

I tried them in a large 2 gallon tank, and they hated it. - Just hid in the Java Moss all Day.

Put them in a Tall Narrow tank i have - Eliptical Shape. And they are liking this alot more. The female is swimming around and looking down at the fish in the main tank below her. It Fits Perfectly in the rim of the tank ans get all the heat and light it needs. Plus it makes water changes really easy.

The Bumble Bee Snail is Laying eggs in there aswell ATM - Is it ok to leave these in there, as i believe they would be good source of food for any fry. and get infusoria from the snail

I Decided to add them to the 90G. And they are doing Great. They have staked out the Java Fern for themselves.
The Male swims around the tank exploring while the female stays close tot he Java Fern.

She has Dropped 2 Fry since going into the 90G, Both are doing fine and swimming around in the riccia.
Strangest thing today, looks like she was courting one of the Clown Killies. Her Fella was zooming around them trying to look all big and rebuff the Clown Killie. So Funny to watch.

Hetty - In the Big Tank She is So Hard to Capture, As Soon as he sees the Camera she hides and then creeps out to look.

Thanks HS,
Can't wait to get more of them to boost there numbers as Derek Suggested @ the next meeting.

Another Fry has been dropped.
Its amazing how they are born an exact copy of the adults in everyway.
The new guy/girl is staying close to his sibling that dropped last week.
They Like picking at settled food rather than taking food as it is in the water.
Female is getting bigger and more confident within the tank, that she is now out in the open water during the day and not staying to the confines of the vallis and moss.

Some new Pix of them
