Oh dear I never though of this as the tropicals are safe if I do a water change before I go we are never away longer than a week.

My or my daughter new Betta hates the filter poor thing looked dead behind the plant pot after I had it on for a little while.

I also need to know what toys they like. He is happy or wants to mate as I have had bubble nests so far. He is such a cute little thing. He looks like hes blowing

kisses too. Comes and says hello and well I just want him to be happy.

congrats on your betta. Dont worry about your filter just leave them out. Most bettas hate them. He is making a bubble nest because he is happy, doesnt mean he wants to mate. My boys have made bubble nests and I have put a female next to their tanks and they have destroyed the nest (typical men all talk!)
I go away for a week and make sure the water is clean and I feed the fish just before I go. As long as the tank is covered so he cant jump he wont come to any harm. Mine are not even hungry when I get home. Most of mine have got small terracotta plant pots, with a button glued over the hole at the bottom (you can get special aqua seal) and I use these for caves. You have to be careful what you use as they can shred their fins.

My boys have mirrors to flare at for a few minutes a day and I put a little plastic ball in for them. They like to nudge it around as it floats-I found this out by accident with a stray floating moss ball but obviously they don't float all the time so I had to find a substitute. They get that for a few minutes as well as I only have one ball and I have 9 boys!!
