No they are completely terrestrial hermit crabs.

Unfortunately these aren't pet hermits, but these are some of the ones I found whilst in Zanzibar this Easter, they were mahoosive.

But I'm confused, are these aquatic or not?

They are Terrestrial.
I have there tank above the Main one to save on Heating. It absorbs Direct Sunlight All Day and get heat from below.

Great pics Gill, they look like their Rugs, not the more common Purple pincers? did they tell you what species they were when you bought them?

All mine are Purple pincers.

Very cool I was gonna get a couple but everywhere I went for info said they needed some kind of heating.

yes they do, you can use reptile heat pads under the tank, they work really well for me.

Hermes IS MIA for around 3 weeks now. Dunno where he went.
my LFS has Baby ones in ATM so will be getting some more.

I have decided to Keep the Big 4*2*2 and make it into a Crab Wonderland. So watch the space.
With a Sandy beach and lots of planting.

I tried them on some Bird Sand. And they love it. They have been Busy picking thru it for the last few hours.
