I have an outbreak of hemorrhagic septecemia in my tank, so far only my corys are suffering and I have lost 2 in 2 days. I think one is also developing pop-eye. My water parameters are fine so no spikes and I do a water change weekly of 25%, which I just did on Saturday. So the only thing I can think of is that I added 2 loaches 10 days ago and the corys may be stressed. The loaches will be going into another tank anyway, probably tomorrow. (or maybe not - should leave until treatment is finished?)

I have taken out all the bogwood/stones etc and done a good vaccuum of the sand and a 40% water change and added Myxazin, as a broad spectrum bactericide. I've also switched off the lights. Can I add Melafix at the same time? Is there anything else I can do? I don't want to lose any more fish. My corys were spawning only a couple of days ago - its heartbreaking. :-(

PLease help!

Okay, since nobody else is replying, I'll give this a shot.

From what I have read, you have to use an anti-baterial medication, like MelaFix, or PimaFix. I'm not familiar with Myxazin, so I'm not sure if you can add MelaFix too....

It also says to keep checking the ammonia and nitrite levels, and do regular small water changes.

I've also heard septicimia is contagious, so you may not want to move your loaches just yet, and have them carry it into another tank.

Sorry I'm not much help, maybe somebody else will come along who is more familiar with this disease.

Thanks for your reply Annastasia. I went into my lfs which is a good one and asked for some advice. The guy there said that there was very little else that I could do at the moment other than continuing to check the water is spot on. He said that it can happen sometimes with corys :dunno: but suggested I speak to one of the other guys when he is in, as he is the cory expert. So I'll just need to keep my fingers crossed.

Only med available in the uk for septicemia is interpet anti internal bacteria med, also you can use melafix with it as well, good luck.

Thanks - I'll need to go and get some tomorrow then, if that is the correct stuff, rather than the Myxazin.

One word of caution if the septicemia has progressed it hard to cure thought i would let yuou no, so you don't build your hopes up to much, good luck.

I think I may only have 2 out of 6 corys left - I can't see the other two anywhere! :-( So as I see it, there's nothing to lose at this point! Thanks anyway, but I'm not going to let them go without a fight :flex:

Not sure if you can get ahold of tetracycline over there, but that's what I treated the exact same illness in one of my bettas and he made a full recovery.

You can from the docors, but you have to no what you are doing, then you should never use antibiotics in the main tank as it will wipe the bacteria colony out.

Well - treating the tank with Myxazin still as I was ill today and could'nt get out. I have found another cory alive and well so far, so I have 3 left out of the 6. They are not showing any signs, neither are the rest of the fish. All eating well and moving normally. I'm also doing a small water change every day and keeping an eye on the temperature. Although the tank is not in direct sunlight, that room gets warmer in the evening with the sun and that may have stressed the corys, as it rose to 28C. So all ok so far.

Good, don't have the temp to high best turned down with what they have, good luck.
