Im not certain if this is classified as brackish but i have a few questions. In tthe back yard of my house there is a stream there that is around 1 1/2 feet deep and about 10 feet wide. I always go back there and observe the catfish-like fish in the stream. They look somewhat like carp and have a black line through them. Here are my questons:

1) I measured the ph of the stream and have a 39 gallon aqaurium set up with no heater (to match the temp of the stream), sand bottom and a HOB filter (hang on back). can i capture a fish and place him in my take? They arent very big, only around 7-8 inches. I have all the needed items for a low ph tank.

2) Should i take rocks from the creek and place them in with the sand as well?

3) Should i take all water for the tank from the stream or fill half de-chlorinated water and half of the stream water?

4) Should i try this at all? Im attempting to classify them, im pretty sure they are carp, yes i know they grow huge and i was just wondering if i could keep them in my tank until he gets too big and release him back in the stream? Im not 100% sure there carp so i will look further into this.

U dont usually find carp in streams they prefere slow moving water, are u sure its not a chub, or something along that lines,

Personal i'de enjoy the fish in its natrual habitat, but if u have to catch and keep it regular water changes, with the water from the stream should be ok.

Unless the stream is tidal then it wont be brackish.

simon...it is highly unlikely that the fish are Chub since DSF is in North America, please remember that this is a multinational board.

DSF, as long as you dont plan to add any non native fish to the tank with the carp(? ) then taking all the decor from the stream will be fine, i would also suggest taking at least 50% of the water from the stream too.
