I've had some bad touble with my tank. A couple of days a go I dicovered the my neons we diyng at that my chinese alge eaters were attacking my other fish, but mostly my dwarf Guramies. I was then told to buy some Gold Guramies to geep the alge eaters in check and I also got 5 female gupies. I was also told that i should use fungus and fin rot treatment as my fish very likely had fin rot or some kind of a parrasite. I gave them first 1 treatment but i didnt work and then i gave them an other the day after. Then all hell broke loose. I lost 5 Male Gupies in 2 days, 3 Paty, 2 alge eaters, 2 Angel and my dwarf guramies and Black widdows started loosing there ballence swimming on the side and up side down - loosing energy fast. The Gold Guramies and female guipes were fine. I then thought well I either do somthing drastic now or i'll loose all the fish. So I changed the water and gave them phenoxymethylpenicillinkalium called primicillin. it's human penicillin for infection. It worked a treat the dwarf guramies are now fine, but they seem to spend a lot of time at the surface with the other fish. The gold guramies though are swimming up and down eating from gravel and plants. But now the water has gone all cloudy (VERY). All readings are normal whats going on?????

Hi Fantast Bronson :)

Welcome to the forum :hi:

There are many experienced fishkeepers here who will be happy to help you sort out your aquarium problems. I am going to move your thread to the Beginners forum where you will be more apt to have it seen by members who can help you.

If you would like to start another thread here, to just introduce yourself, please feel free to do so. :D

Fish staying at the surface usually indicates a water quality issue. Most likely not enough aeration or perhaps the med has caused a problem in the water. I would start doing 20-25% water changes daily for a few days and add some aeration. Also if your filter has a separate carbon insert you may want to change it in order to eliminate the med and/or other possible contaminants. Keep us posted :)

I had the same thing happen in my tank. Turns out that medications can kill off all the good bacteria that lives in your filter thus turning th water cloudy and causing problems for your fish! I went to my LFS and they recommended adding this stuff called stresszyme to my tank (Bascially a bottle full of bacteria) overnight my tank was clear and the fish were happy. you can buy this stuff from any fish store. Good luck :D

I concur with aloaring. The treatment you did wont just kill off bad bacteria it killed off all or most of your good bacteria too. The cloudiness is like seeing all the little dead bodies of the bacteria. Just go to your local pet store...tell them what happened and that you believe you killed off your bacteria. They will sell you some sort of bacteria in a bottle and you should be fine

Quite a few meds will cause the saturated oxygen level in your water to drop (especially ones that treat fungi) which will cause the fish to go to the surface to breathe. The only thing you can really do is to do water changes as soon as the meds have worked.

Thanks all for you kind advice. When I got thinking it was quite obvious that the meds would kill ALL bacteria. Said that though, the fish are doing fine, the ones that are left :( . The Guramies look like they are having a great time, the remaing gupies at platys are staying at the surface. The cloudy water has gone as well so I'm a happy bunny :flex: .
Tomorrow or today as it is I'll change the water and get the water quality up and going.
Would I need to "vacume" the bottom of the tank??? General advise on a healthy tank would be accepted with a big smile :hyper:

Yes definitely vac the bottom. If you dont getit all done at once that is not a problem. I usually break the tank down into sections and do one section each time i do a water change. I do my water changes when i get a nitrate reading between 25-30 ppm and if a tank looks like it needs an additional one i do that as well. If you watch the fish carefully they can also tell you when something is not quite right. Normally active fish will start to mope around and be less active. colors may fade, fish stick at the surface, fish stick at the bottom, all these are indicators that something is not right. My first action is usually a good water change to see if that gets things going properly and it usually does. HTH :)

I think I might have found the cause of the evil
A couple of months ago I bought a big piece of Bog wood. I was told by the shop that it was treated at the only thing I needed to do was clearn it with tap water. But when I was reading a book last night about fishis :D it said the a piece of bog wood should be soaked for weeks or months before it is entered in to the tank. Hence THE PROBLEM!!!!!!!!! What do u think????
Since this piece of loveley wood (I might add) got in the tank I have been struggeling with ph (6,4 to 6,6) so I have had to use Proper PH 7.0 to get it up to PH 7.0. Not a god way or a bad way of doing it???????????
So now I have taken it out of the tank and put it in a bucket for soaking. Now the question is........ should I change water, did it yesterday, or should I leave it to settle?? I have been told by my father who used to have fish when I was a kid that if u change the water more than once a year the inviroment wont have a chance to find it rhythem (and yes my fishes does play JAZZ B) ) True or false???????
I know its a bit confusing but I hope that some of u can give me some pointers to how to do it right.
Thanks for all the help so far
