    got a fish for christmas what is it

I..think it might be a juvenile red belly piranha? I could easily be way off but that's my guess.
If it is they are illegal in some states. They also require large tanks.

Looks like a pacu to me. Which requires a large tank also. If you can get a better shot of the face, I will be able to tell you for sure.

You have a baby pacu. A piranha will have a stripe before the tail as well as on the tail.

I'd also go with a pacu unless you could visibly see a good set of teeth
