I have found a tank that my sister used to keep snakes in, but it only has a wooden lid which she made to stop the snakes getting out, any ideas of what i can do? I have measured it and the size hood i found is like £60! I don't really want to spend £60 to start off a new hobby.

why not make your own hood? or just adapt the snake one?. how big is the tank?

Good idea, but what about lights and all that?
My sisters got the measurements, i'll try and get them soonish. Its quite big though!

you can buy light starter units there about £30 ish depending. you could do a open tank? jsut get a condensation tray or something , the lights are more expencive if your doing a open look

what do you want to do with the tank? just have it lit or grow plants?

My very, very first tank I used a piece of plexiglas cut a bit larger than the top, and I cut out a place for the filter heater cord. Then I just used an under-cabinet fluorescent fixture ($10 at Home Depot) and set that on top of the plexi. To clean I'd just lift the plexi a bit and set it diagonally across the top. You can also split the plexi lengthwise and then use clear packing tape to make a hinge of sorts to make feeding and cleaning easier.

Keep us posted on what you do!

+1 to thinking of getting involved in the hobby and trying to keep costs down, However £60 is not that much to start this hobby ( but it is too much for a hood),most whom start off would have to fork out £200+++ to even get the tank.

My suggestion would be to sell the tank you have as a viv you might get 30-40£ maybe and then buy a nano tank set-up or somthing similiar, I think some are under £60 for a complete set-up, this would then allow you to still have a tank but to then consider saving for an upgrade. :good:

excuses... iv got a friend in Scotland whos 15 shes got 3 tanks going (i think) and im only 17 (18 soon)

there are cheep ways of getting set ups i think iv spent £150 since i started 3 tanks which are set up and running *i did get a tank for my birthday*

If you had plastic/silk plants, you wouldn't NEED a light, but it is a desirable thing to have.

Let it be known though that the things you need to get started this hobby are much more than just a tank.

You're looking at £15 for a test kit, another £2-3 for ammonia (assuming you cycle it fishless), probably at least £5 on food initially (though I've not reached that stage so it may be more or less than that), some more on ornaments, plants, sand, that kind of thing, not to mention the actual fish themselves.
