Heya

I have a 60L tank that has been running about a year.
Contains: 5 x neon tetras added (march 2011), 4 x black neon tetras (may 2011), red tailed black shark (march 2011), 3 x columbian tetras (2 weeks ago) and 2x pepper corys (added 2 weeks ago) oh and 3 large apple snails (january 2011) with babies.
ALL the tetras are swimming wierdly almost side to side and the neons (inc black neons) have lost the majority of their colour and one has lost an eye. My Gibbicep that I'd had since April has also died randomly with no symptoms of illness. All other fish are fine. And none show signs of being attacked by others. Although the almost colourless black neon had small black flecks dotted around it- possible parasite? Or neon tetra disease?

Tank levels tested Friday and has showed no abnormalities, 70% water change on Sunday with new plants added, temp set at 27 degrees C and no problems until yesturday.

Please advise ASAP

Check the ammonia ph nitrite and nitrate level. research about swimbladder diseaese. rts should be housed in a minimum of 55gallon. rts are aggressive and could be attcking your tetras or constantly chasing them. which would exhaust them. some plecos suck on to other fish feeding off their mucus layers and some may even eats eyes from what ive read. hospital the poor fish and treat them with healing products. try adding salt to the tank after water changes (dissolved) 1 teaspoon per 10gallons

Hey, thanks for reply.

Done another water test and again nothing to make me think it's the water. The rts is going into a bigger tank later this week a 4ftx2ftx2ft (sorry I don't use gallons) though he is still fairly small. Still no clue as to why my gibbicep has died- though thinking it may be rts related. Colour has come back to all but 1 of the bn.tetras and 1 of the neon tetras, one of which i have noticed has a crooked spine (which I've only seen with harlequins).

The newest fish in the tank are the columbians, is it possible THEY could be stressing the others out?

I unfortuatly don't have another tropical tank to seperate sick fish into, but am treating with aqua.salt.

Do black neons even get ntd? They are a completely different sp so I wouldn't have thought it would be that if it is affecting the neons and black neons... I could be wrong about that though, I'm not big on fish diseases (without meaning to sound up myself, I've never had any in 7 years! )

Exact test results would help though.

Did your neon always have a crooked spine or has it become crooked? All fish can have deformities like that, it's not limited to harlequins

Hmmm. Levels aren't THAT high but really there should be none. I'd do a nice big water change first off and see if that perks them up.

0.25 ammonia and nitrite are bad hun - you need to get them to 0. Large water change and test again would be the best thing... what filter is it?

Excellent question but no my neon hasn't always had a crooked spine which just adds to the mystery. Also just discovered the body of my white cloud minnow who was 3...so I think she was just trying to kick me when I'm down.

80% water change coming up!!!...well after work where I can water change all the other fish in the store

it seems to be doing what it should be, and it's clean. As you know we only sell the stingrays and the fluval Us (which i reeeeeaaaallllyyyyy don't like) xx

If you still have levels of ammonia and nitrite after a year then I'm not 100% sure it is doing what it should be!

Please don't add salt with corys in there,they dont tolerate it at all well.
