Hi ive buyed about 100 oscar fry there about 1 inch, my tanks only 3 and abit ft long its a juwel rio 180!!! How long can i keep them in there? im buying bigger tanks but my fish room is still getting made, Im planning to sell almost all of these oscars anyway i just need to hold them for abit

Hmmm...not 100% sure but if we use that old rule of thumb about 1" of fish per gallon of water...your 180 litres is roughly 40 UK gallons - so that would make about 40 inches of fish (but you have 100 inches of fish approx!). Even if we doubled that guide up to 2" per gallon, that would still make you overstocked.

The thing is that if you keep these fry in overstocked conditions for too long, it could cause stunting of their growth and then you would have problems selling them.

I don't know - I've never kept that amount of fish in one tank myself so maybe someone else will have a better idea. I mean, my fish do have fry - lots of them - but they are usually eaten off within a 2 week period when they are still teeny wigglers.

I guess for now all you can do is make sure you have the best filtration possible, do extra water changes and try to get at least one other tank set up to move some of them into, if possible.

Regards

Athena

Seems odd that someone whos building a fish room isnt able to answer these sorts of questions themselves.

When i say fish room i mean a spare room for my fish tanks to go in. Just because i have a few tanks does that make me an expert?.. if i knew everythink about fish why would i even be on here? so if you dont have any advice keep your thoughts to yourself.

Thanks for the reply :) yeah i was aware of that the inch rule but i just wanted to see if someones ever kept them in a tank that size, Ive seen a few people who have kept around that much in a similar tank size. I just need to keep them in there for a while as i am going to get rid of most of them in a week or two.

Ahh well in that case perhaps you should consider your wording a little better. When you use the term "fish room" one expects a large number of tanks and for said person to have wealth of knowledge. For someone to have so many young fish i might be forgiven to think that you were perhaps a breeder or trader. My advice to you would be to spend a little more time wording your posts. ;)

For constructive advice, i would highly recommend a twice weekly water change on the tank and to get rid of them within a month. Its quite hard to feed so many fish in one tank and its possible you might lose a few so good water conditions will help a lot.

personally id be doing daily 50% water changes on that tank and feeding 3-4 times daily to speed up growth. tbh you have bought a load of fish that will be dificult to sell on ethically, are you gonna ask people if they have room for them??? oh and in less than four weeks with good water and feeding they will be over double the size they are now and if you havent moved any on you will find them getting stunted. good luck

Hi, I can sell them pretty much instantly, my lfs will buy them £1 for there size and £2.50 when there about 3inchs so im going to sell as much as they got space for in there tanks that week. I can prob get rid of about 20-40and keep rest until there about 3 inch then sell most and keep about 5 and let them grow alittle and might sell them or keep them ill see how it is.

Thanks

Hmm what if the room was to be a small room that fits 2 tanks in there lol, I could still call it a fish room.. :p, and erm thanks for the advice but im alittle confused because youve said twice a week and someone else have said 50% every day lol

you have a lot of fry and if you want them to grow quick and well then you will need to be feeding them loads of small meals to boost their metabalism and growth. as you do this you will find that your filter will not keep up with the waste/ammonia they produce so doing daily water changes will help keep this at bay. ideally on my fry tanks i do every other day changes but as you have a lot of fish which will potentially get big quickly id be doing it every day but ultimately you will have to see what fit your routine and what works for you. once i had a bristlenose fry tank in my kitchen as i was decorating my fishroom. as an experiment i did daily water changes religously and they were the quickest growing and chunkiest plecs ive ever produced from this pair and i was able to move them on a lot earlier than normally.

on a side note your lfs may take some off you but if they is not a high demand for them then they wont be needing anymore off you for a while. bear in mind these are big fish and only a small percentage of people actually have the space to keep these lovely fish.

Thats because his advice was for feeding, growth and well being, a breeders mindset. Mine was simply in the mindset for keeping them alive until you can shift them. After reading though the thread again, i would also now suggest more water changes, the rate of growth over a month isnt something i considered first time around.

Hmm i guess the more that stay alive the better so im going to try do alot of water changes. Ive already got a buyer for 40 of them anyway so thats good :)

Yeah ok thanks, I know this might sound stupid but can you change the water too much? and the good thing is ive got a buyer for 40 of the fish my lfs are going to buy them so there will hopefully be less aggression in the tank until i can get a seller for them, and btw my lfs is very popular in the area and most fish are easyly gone :)

And im btw i dont know what i am loool i just randomly saw these fish so i thought mayaswell and im going to make alot of profit of them so i guess im a trader? kind of LOL, altho im setting a few other tanks up i just need to get a lil more cash to get all items so i might start breeding fish then mayb selling them.

My concern is why would you buy 100 oscars knowing they grow incredibly fast and not have the space to keep them?

you ask can you do to many water changes??? the answer is no, ask anyone who keeps discus. as long as the temp and the ph is the same then they isnt a problem.

are u getting cash or store credit?

I can get either cash/credit they said its up to me. :)

Because i am paying almost nothing for them and getting about 200x profit. <<< not 200 LOL about 10-15x :D
I was pretty much sure i can shift them in a month. I just needed to know how long i can keep them.
