Hi all,

Firstly, me name is John. Never really used forums before, but due to the lack of experiance in my new chosen hobby, ive decided its a good idea to start :)
A recent breakup has lead me to seek something to take up my time and keep my head ticking. I decided Tropical fish. Im a complete noob to tropical fish.. actually, fish in general. But im set on really learning the skill of keeping tropical fish.

So i got my tank. Set it up and was advised by the shop to leave it for 3 days before putting any fish in. Even thought their panflet said 7 days. So i read around and found lots of different opinions for how long is safe to wait. It got to 4 days and i was due to work for 8 straight days. I really wanted fish in there. Im rather inpatient. So went to my new fish shop i found and the lady advised 7-10 days. To which i didnt listen and took the risk. An idiot i know. But the fish were dead by morning :( 4 zebra danio's i put in there.

So i did a partial water change and kept at waiting. i went back to the shop Friday with a water sample this time for them to test. The water was little amonia and nitrite. but was told its nearly there and another 4 days should do it.

So thats pretty much my story. Im dying to get some life in there and the thing properlly started... but ive found a problem im really hoping someone can help/advise on. When i did the partial water change, i noticed that there was a strange white substance around the heater. It was on the suckers and the knob to adjust heat. Shop didnt know what it was either. So i cleaned off anyway.
Few days later it was back.

Now, ive just looked in the tank and ive noticed past few days the surface of the water seems cloudy. The tank in general seems fine, but on the surface its werid. I run my finger across the top and, with difficulty explaining, there's a layer of odd, oiley - stuff. it turns white as my finger runs through it, and stays on my finger too. Its all very strange and im worried what it is. Was really hoping to get some fish in there next couple days. If anyone has any idea what so ever - any help would be greatly apreciated.
Ive attached a couple of images, but its a pretty difficult thing to capture. Especially with an iphone.

**OK, so i cant work out how to upload a picture! any help in this area would be super...

***apologies for my cluelessness.

Hi John - welcome to the fish forum!! I'm still new myself, having been on the prowl here and causing trouble since April.

Since you have a newly set up aquarium, and now without any fish, most members on here would strongly encourage you to take the time to do a "fishless cycle" at this point. If you take some time and read up on the threads here...

Beginner's Resource Center

...it will give you a very good idea of what would be involved in the process. You will be amazed at how well new fish will take to a fully cycled tank!

As you start to digest this information, do not hesitate to post questions in the "Your New Freshwater Tank" area. Lots of helpful types in there looking for questions from people having trouble.

Regarding your white substance in the tank, perhaps it is just some type of algae, which I would not think would be a problem yet. Not sure about the oily surface, though. Maybe someone else will have some ideas.

Was this tank new when you bought it? Can you give us some stats:
1. How big is it?
2. What kind of filter running in it?
3. Heater?

Thanks!

Greenville Guy

Thanks for the quick reply man!

Im gonna have a proper read at that tommorrow at work ;)

The tank is 64 litre and i brought it from new. the heater is a Deltatherm by Interpet.. The filter... well thats by the same company.. is about all i can tell about that... it has two filter things in it.. like a black thicker one and white one..
