My Sterbai have red gills. What could be the matter with them & how do I cure it?

A quick google of this pointed to ammonia poisening, do any other fish in the tank have the same thing? Ofcourse wait also for someone elses opinion Just thought i'd post as it's late.

Prob Ammonia poisoning/bad water but also could be parasites.


Tho I will mention that when I first got one of my Platys I thought he had red gills but it turns out that's his natural colouring. You got any photos of your fish?

Thanks all. I will do a major water change & do some water tests.

Might be because I cleaned the filter recently and some of the good bacteria died.

I'm afraid 1 of my sterbais didn't make it. He was the weakest of the four.

I've done water tests and they are zero for Nitrites but 0.25 mg/L for ammonia. Is this still a dangerous level? Should I so another 25% water change?

None of my other fish are effected but I already had problems with my sterbais because they lost their barbels. Not sure if I ever fixed that problem but they never grew back.
