My young female guppy has lost weight rapidly!
She cannot stay still in water (meaning she keeps floating up) but shes not bloated! I have separated her to the hospital tank which is heated but not filtered as i don't have a spare filter so i will be doing 50%-75% water changes everyday!
Tank stats:
Ammonia - 0ppm
Nitrite - 0ppm
Nitrate - 15-20ppm
PH - 6.4

I just looked into my tank and her stomach isn't sunken in but it's starting to!
I have a picture here.
Sorry about quality.
She was probably a little overfed because she scoffed all the food.
Red line - How her stomach was yesterday.

She has never been with a male and looks alot fatter in the pic because of blurriness. Her stomach has actually just started to cave in only just! Yesterday she was a healthy weight but now she has to keep her head down to stay swimming.

Hi Alessa

Sorry to hear about your poor little guppy. My guess is that she is now past the stage of saving, unfortunately.

Usually when a fish begins to lose weight rapidly like that, it's a sign of fungal infection, usually sparked off by some type of stress in the tank. It's an internal fungus that lies dormant in all fish but if the fish gets stressed, then the fungus springs to life very quickly and if not treated immediately the fish will go downhill at a rapid pace.

The darkening areas you can see are the damage to the internal organs and brain. In cases like this, where it has reached this extent of damage, there is such little hope of the fish surviving that it's kinder to euthanise it.

Not sure if you're in the UK or elsewhere but if you make sure you always have a bottle of treatment handy (I'm in the UK and I would use Protozin) then you'll be able to start treatment as soon as you notice this problem, if it should happen again in any other of your fish.

Hope that's helped for future reference.

Regards - Athena

She's still alive and is gaining weight! She's on the mend without any med or anything!

She's back with the other females now because she got her weight back nicely and is now eating better again!

That's great news, Alessa. It obviously wasn't a fungal disease then. Maybe she just had a swimbladder disorder that has self-corrected, which can happen. Some fish show discoloration/darkening when they are stressed, so I guess the dark area you saw on her body must have been a temporary change in body colouring.

Glad the panic is over now!

Regards, Athena

She she still has the dark patch but i think it's just her colouring because she is healthy again.

i used to keep guppies, and it sounded to me iike she dropped her fry - hence the loss of stomach
but we over stressed by the ordeal of birthing, hence the recovery when isolated and having a bit of r&r

i could be wrong, but experience makes me think this is the answer

glad she is ok now

She's a young one from my batch of fry from my adults. She has never been with a male in her whole life so she is a virgin female guppy. Which is hard to come by!!!
