I have a 55 gal. tank. It is still in the process of cycling. It is at the nitrite spike now. I have been doing daily water changes, trying to keep the levels down. Being a begginer, I made the mistake of adding way too many fish before the tank was cycled. (If I only knew then, what I know now.) My violet goby was the very first fish I got, that was about 4 months ago. The past couple of days, he has not been himself. A couple of days ago, he swam around the tank for the entire day, which is odd for him. He usually comes out of hiding at night to eat. Then the next day, he was just lying on the bottom of the tank, not in his usually hiding spot. He would ocationally swim to the top and would do loop to loops. Never seen him do that before. He looks like he is gasping for air, but I have plenty of air going through the tank.
My question is, is there anything that I can do to save this fish. It is my favorite of all the fish and I would hate to see him die. I'm sure that the nitrite level has taken a tole on him. Can I quarintine him and give him any medication, or is it just certain doom?
Please help!

Is it a gobi dragon? It does sound like he's suffering - do you have anyone that has a cycled tank where you can rehouse him until your tank cycles? Failing this, the only thing that you can do is daily water changes. It will prolong the cycle, but hopefully it will keep your gobi alive. The nitrite spike is a sign that the tank is nearing completion and it shouldn't last too long.

Yes, it is a dragon goby. And no, I dont know anyone else that could house him for me. I am doing daily water changes. I guess I will just keep it up and hope for the best. I really dont think he will last much longer though. :-(
