Hi everyone. Brand-spanking new to the forum and joined specifically to get help!

We have a 29L freshwater tank. Our Syno, Spike, is 7" approx and probably close to 10 years old now. He's never really ever bothered the rest of our fish in the tank; the only thing he'd do is do away with a dead fish if we didn't get it out of the tank in time. He's been by himself for a few months now because, as our fish aged and died, we didn't add any. We ususally had hatchets, tetras of various kinds, corys, ghost cats, and various live-bearers over the years. Come to think of it, we had a large 6" fantail goldfish with him when he was smaller... Anyway, last night, we added 3, 3-inch fantail goldfish and everything was good through the evening. Upon getting up this morning, I went to check our fish and their tails are torn to shreds! And the one with a gorgeous white pearl scale with bright orange is missing much of it's scales now as well, as it's tail is shredded...

We've evicted Spike into a large bucket, just to separate everyone. We have added stress coat to the tank. We're going to pick up slime coat, too. Watching the white one, it doesn't look too hopeful, the poor thing is really beat up, but still swimming around & eating this morning. The other two have less-than beautiful tails, but no other major damage. What now?? Is there any hope? Will their tails ever heal and go back to full and flowy? What can we do to ensure they stay healthy while they heal??

And what on earth do we do with Spike??

My heart is breaking for all of our poor fishies, including poor evicted Spike... Thank you, in advance, for all of your help!!!

no, not a typo. same tank we've had for years. it's my sister's fish that she picked out all those years ago. we didn't know better and the guy at petsmart said it'd be fine. right now, just trying to figure out how to save the goldfish, if possible. we'll deal with spike later, getting him into a new tank...

eupterus require a minimum of 40 gallons and way way way too small for fantails as well, thats why he's attacked them, there are a territorial species

so we've just lucked out over the last 10 years with the syno leaving all of the other fish alone...?

I'm not looking to be criticized, I'm looking for help to save our goldfish, please. Thanks.

sorry if i sounded like i was trying to criticise you as that wasn't the intention.
The goldfish should be fine, their tails will grow back in time, if you intend to keep them tho i would suggest a upgrade in size to your tank to at least a 40 gallon tank. also out of interest what type of filter are you using as goldfish are one of the biggest waste producers going

thank you. I'm sorry if I'm too touchy. I feel absolutely horrible that I put the goldies in there, not realizing the threat Spike would be, so I'm really beating myself up over this.

We're restricted to the size tank as of right now, but have heavier filtration because the goldies are so heavy with the waste.

What steps can I take to help the fish heal and protect them from infection while their scales and tails grow back?

i usually use something like tetraaqua general tonic (which now isn't what it used to be as they've changed the products use), where in the country are you? i have a spare tank if your not too far away you can have till you get something sorted

:good: Also add some aquarium salt. One of my fish had It's long pretty tail chewed over half off about 4 weeks ago and it's looking like it will be full size in another 3 weeks. Your fish will do the same and look perfect again.

I assume you mean a long 29 gallon tank, not a 29 litre tank?

Either way, the tank is quite a bit too small and synos are not good companions for goldies anyway.

Tbh, the best way to get everyone healthy and with suitable tank-mates is to seperate the goldies and the non-coldwater fish. Goldies should be kept with other goldies as they produce too much waste and are often too boisterous or too fragile (depending on variety) to be kept with many other fish. The goldies (sound like you have fancies) need 20 gallons as a minimum for the first fish and 10 gallons for the second. However, having seen 4 full grown fancies in a 5 gallon tank, it was quite a sorry sight as the fish were all about 9 inches or so and definitely needed more space. A better estimate is 30 gallons, + 15 gallons for each additional fish.

The syno himself needs 40 gallons minimum and as you've found out, shouldn't be kept with goldfish.

As for the actual damage to the goldfish, keep them seperated and do 30% water changes daily to keep the water super clean for the goldfish to heal.
