hi, i am new and hope i am posting correctly.

i have a male molly which has for some reason decided to constantly attack a male platy.

i have a female platy also, but this is left alone. why? what do i need to do?

any help will be gratefully received.

Well what are your stocking. 2nd They must be 1 male to 2 female. What size is your tank>?

Male livebearers (mollies, swordtails, guppies, platies, etc) are territorial to some degree, but mainly towards other rival males. The molly is trying to get rid of the platy so he can have the girls to himself. They don't normally do too much damage to each other but occasionally one will become overly aggressive and then it should be removed.
It is preferable to keep a number of female livebearers for each male in the tank. Alternatively having a tank of males or females can help limit aggression and harassment issues.

thanks, we are getting 2 more females today.

much appreciated.

Having lots of plants in the tank can help too. Floating plants like Water Sprite (Ceratopteris thalictroides) is a great plant for livebearers. But plants that grow tall, (up to the surface) are also good. Plants like Ambulia, Ludwigia & Hygrophilla polysperma can be planted in the gravel or left to float around the surface where they continue to grow.
