HELP HELP HELP!!! I have had a tropical tank for 2 months now, i have lost only 2 Guppies so far due to Nitrate, now i have that under control and everything great. i had 4 new fish bought for me on sunday. I went home yeaserday and all of my Neons were dead x 5. 1 of my Tetras and 1 of my Guppies were also dead. all i could see was the guppie who had a lovely red tail was white and one of my other Guppies which is still alive when he swam his tail was like flaking. Is this Fin rot or White spot i hate it when they die, please someone help me

you need to do a test then post a result, are you sure it was nitrate not nitrite ( just asking as i had a nitrite prob)
i would also do a water change of 20-30% as u say you added another 4 fish that would have increased the problem yet again..

i know nothing about the tail problem tho sorry, but i should think someone with knowledge will be along very soon...

but i do know that a water change while your waiting can only be a good thing

sorry for your losses xxx

If your having problems with Nitrates, then the only solution it wc's. Nitrite means a prob with your filter bacteria. ie. your tank is not completely cycled, or your adding too may fish at once and causing a bacterial bloom. like shelaghfishface said, test your parms and post so we can get an idea of whats going on.

Also, a little thing, but I would always quarentine any fish that I just bought from an lfs. Even it is the most reputable lfs in the world, I would still quarentine due to a possible illness or disease being introduced. If you hold the fish in it's seperate tank for two to three weeks with no sign of illness or disease, then you can be 95% sure that they are safe to go into your main tank :good:

Can you describe some of the symptoms the fish are showing.

White spot is identified by little white dots on the fish. They are easily seen on the fins and body of dark fish. Light coloured fish can be a little more difficult to see the dots on the body but should be clearly seen on their fins too.

Fungus will show up as white fluffy stuff on the body

Finrot is characterised by splitting of the tail and a possible reddening of the same area. It is normally caused by poor water quality damaging the fish's mucous coating and then bacterial infections set in.

Test your water quality for ammonia, nitrite & PH. Also check the temperature.

Have you cleaned the filter recently and how did you do it?

When was the last time you did a water change on the tank and how did you go about changing it?

It's probably too early to be adding Neons, too; not the hardiest of fish in a new-ish set-up.

The symptoms of the fish, well there wasnt any to tell, only the tails were split and on the Guppie half of it had gone white from bright orange.

I changed the 20% of the water on friday last, than added 4 new fish on sunday then by wednesday most of them were dead but not just the new ones.

when i clean the filter i just squeeze it out in the water i have taken out of the tank

Assuming the water is good I would say the new fish might have introduced a bacterial infection. But you would normally see some signs on the fish. Sick fish generally lose colour and don't swim normally. They can have clamped fins and breath heavily.

Have you checked the water quality?
