Hi I am new here and have a question. We are just letting our new tropical tank settle before we stock with some fish, and there is a spider web like filament developing on the plastic plants we have added. Does anyone have any ideas what this is, if its something to worry about or not? Thanks

Have you read up on cycling your tank?

As regards to the web like stuff, need to see a picture really :good:

Chris.

thanks, yeah we are settling the tank then starting cycling next week. I'll try to get a pic

Since your doing a fishless cycle why don't you go ahead and add some ammonia to your tank to get it started while it settles. As far as the web looking stuff i have no idea , i've never experienced that in any of my tanks.

From my experience, that stuff comes from the insides of decorations. I had a rock decoration once with a hole in it, a tunnel, and that stuff was in it, even after rinsing, take it out and rinse again, should be okay. Just a hunch.

we did rinse them well, but thats the only thing we can think of doing as well :/

I had same problem, white hairy stuff on plants.

Didn't think it was hair algae because it was white but one day it started to turn green, so keep an eye on it, and see if yours turn green as well.

My plants were live, I removed them from tank, and later found out that the particular plant was not supposed to be completely submerged, why lfs sold it to my, I don't know, make money apparently.

So I just wanted to mention that maybe yours will slowly start to turn green as mine did.

I am new to fish-keeping, so will take some time to figure all these things out.
