Hello everyone,
My brother-in-law bought a puffer from the LFS the other day. He didn't really research it at all and went by what the owner told him... Well anyways the puffer picked on his loach so he wanted to know if I would take it before he flushed it (I doubt he would have flushed it,but one never knows!). So I now have it but I don't know what to set it up in. Is this a freshwater guy or brackish? The torpedo like body says it's brackish, but I'm not all that sure with my ID powers. Any help would be awesome!! I know I'm going to need to setup a new tank for it........... Just need to know what kind. Thanks in advanced!!

It's a green spotted puffer, of the sort aquarists call "Tetraodon nigroviridis" but unless you have a DNA lab handy you can't actually confirm that. In any event, it'll do fine in (hard) freshwater for a while, even months at a time, but for long term care will need brackish water SG 1.005 upwards.

Doesn't work well in community tanks; tends to be nippy (a fin-eater in the wild) and adults (the males?) can be territorial.

Cheers, Neale
