Ok i have 2 female very pregnant Platys..

and the male that impregnated them is just amazingly colorfull.. im hoping to save some fry..

anyhow the female are staying away from other fish now picking at rocks and swimming on there own.. was wondering a couple of things..

how long till they drop?

should i pull them from my tank and set up my 5.5 gal tank i have?

and advice would be great..

Also can i use water from main tank to fill my small tank? so the fish won't die?

Thanks all!!

I'm no expert but... Normally takes 3 - 4 weeks for a platy to give birth. You'll see the gravid spot get more black as the days go by. I've never taken a female platy out for her to give birth, they've done it in the main tank and the fry have been fine. Platy fry are fast and smart, and most will probably be able to stay alive & uneaten. If you want to catch them and put them in a breeding net that's fine too, check the sides of the tank as they swim down and bury themselves in the gravel. Also check your filter, they get sucked in there.

I would put your female in the other tank, though as you say you need to set it up, It will be uncycled and thay could harm your fry more than there perents.

I supose it depence on how much you want the litter, If you leave with there perent then you may only have 1 or 2 suvive, but that depends on what else is in the tank as well.

I would'nt put the fry in a net, as it will stunt there growth.

Good luck, let us know how ya get on, and what you deside to do.

Do not move her !! leave her be and net the fry moving your female anywhere could cause death after the stress of bitrth ...... out of 1 batch I got 16 molly fry out of a un-well pleanted tank with 5 fish in it ...... you will be amazed at how they can survive ...... 4 weeks is pushing your luck I would expect closer too 8 3weeks-3months ... I have heard both

It would be best not to move her because that could stress her out and kill her. For you... I'd guess about maybe 1 week for them to give birth if their as pregnant as you say they are.

I don't think it's wrong, unless you put them in a couple of day befor they give birth. It is only good to put them in a tank a week or 2 befor they give birth.

yep thats what I do, well try to do. :D

Well if you do this it causes stress anyway ........then she is all alone to add to it or help in rarer cases if she is taunted ......and then she is stressed after birth ...... and then you have to give her maybe a week to get over it ....and then you have to stress her again by moving her to the main not good

hey all, my female platys seem to be hanging around the water heater, and near the top of the water, just wondering if this could be any signs of them being pregnant?

thanks

Haha Chris, do you beleave you could be so kind as too make your own thread next time ???? Yes she may be pregnant or very ill getting ready to die .... My female sword exhibited the same behavior, actually both did except my first stayed at the top in the corner barely moving ..... does she have a gravid spot ??? if not she could be pregnant and not exhibit one. In this case chances are she is VERY plump if preggo
