Hi all i have now had my tank set up for about 6 weeks of which i have had a few plants in for 5 weeks but within 2 weeks of planting they have gone brown & look like they are beginning to die.

I have had nutrafin natural co2 system installed same time as i planted the plants
I have also being using JBL ferropol 24 daily fertiliser
iam using black sand as my substrate
Lighting is just standard which came with tank 1 x 20watt PowerGlo & 1 x 20watt AquaGlo
Its a 125 litre tank
my lfs said the plants are very hardy and would grow in any conditions

If anybody could tell me where iam going wrong or any advice would be much apprecited

Many thanks

Hope this works!! not a great pic!!

It looks like you are having amazon swords. Do you also have cryprocorynes? These 2 families of plants often go through a 'melt down' once planted, but should grow back later. With these plants I always prefer to use root tabs instead of liquid fertilizer as they are mainly root feeders. When I was using an UGF these plants were growing like crazy! I have never achieved that growth again with any other substrate/filter.

Are they Definatly african swords ?? I just ashed lfs for some plants that were easy to keep. I dont know anything about the other type of plant that i have other than its suppose to grow & cover the tank floor like a carpet but that is also currently looking like its dying.

Will try the root tabs thanks biulu.

The big leaves you have above the wood in your picture are amazon swords for sure. They yellowing leaves, I do not know. Let's see for a carpet plant: how tall are they? Is it a rosette plant, or does it grow through runners? If it is only a few cms: it could be E. tenellus (a mini sword), lilaeopsis, glossostigma (this plant needs high light though...), hemianthus calictroides Cuba (this plant grows under lower light but only in shallow tanks). Anything that sounds familiar to you? Did they give you names or did they only tell you they were easy...?

The plants you refer to with the big leaves as amazon swords are actually on my background picture lol sorry!!!
But the ones with the yellowing leaves i dont have a clue what they are, as i say the lfs said they would grow in any conditions, they have recently growing small brown tenticals on the underside of the leaves would anybody have a clue what these could be & why???

  Ok, fair enough. I think the yellowing leaves are some sort of fern. Have you done a search on that? Are you sure they are truly aquatic? Since this may be causing the problem.
