O.K..........I was thinking of getting an all-in-one like the Juwel or AquaOne but numerous people have mentioned that eventually I would need to upgrade the lighting and filter etc.

So, after weighing it all up I'm now thinking of buying a glass tank with lid and stocking it will the filter, lighting etc etc.....

For either a 4 or 5 foot tank, could anyone assist in providing filter sizes etc etc

thanks heaps..........

work out the tank sizes in litres or gallons, you'll find filters have a rating for what volume of water they are suitable for...... remember they tend to be a bit generous, i'd go for something that say's it suitable for your size + 20% or so.

Eheim are my favourite brand i'd recommend looking at they're externals

edit - oh and by the way, i think your doing the right think not going for a package deal :good:

Thanks Miss Wiggle, sounds like good advice that I will take onboard................

And now to research all the stuff about external canisters etc.........I have no idea at this stage..........

Do you know of any websites that explain all this, how to fit them, about filters etc??

it's dead easy..... basically you have a box that's your filter that sits underneath or near your tank, there's pipes for in and out these go up behind the tank and into the tank and are stuck there with suckers. they're fairly easy to set up and get working so don't worry :good:

A trip to your LFS would let you see the items, which may help you visualise what you read on the web.
The fluval external filters come with a DVD showing you how to put it altogether, it's really simple (I managed it :look:) I'm sure they would send you one if you e-mail them, the principles are the same regardless of which brand you buy.

The great thing about filters is that you can't really over filter, a bigger filter has more filter area, and therefore is more efficient. (As long as the water flow isn't too strong for the fish in your tank!)
