So I'm at Petco buying crickets for my bearded dragon, and as I'm waiting I'm looking at the fish and I have always felt bad for the Bettas because they're in such little containers, and my policy with them is the same as puppies from puppy mills, however cute they are, don't buy them, you're only supporting what they're doing. But then I see these little baby bettas and I buy one *sigh* It wasn't until i got home that i realized that I have no idea how to care for a Betta, so I browse google. Here's what I have so far:

1 baby betta - she is swimming around just fine, she seems fairly active for a Betta and is slightly purple, but mostly opaque grey but the tip of her fins are a bright pink. (i'm calling her she because 'it' seems too cold but I don't really know the gender)

she is in a vase like you would get for a large arrangement of flowers with pebbles at the bottom.

I have beta water conditioner, betta floating mini pellets and freeze dried blood worms

I feed her 4 pellets every day and blood worms occasionally (i've only had her a few days)

I plan on changing her water in the morning because its beginning to look a little cloudy and I'm gonna steal a plant from my Koi fish tank for her or get a cheap one from petsmart like anubius

What else do I need for a baby?

You neeed to put her/him in a proper tank with a filter not in a vase.

Well its better to have a heater then none filter you dont need but you will need to do feq water changes a betta (even though alot of people think they live in puddles) need a decent space at least 5 gallons (imay be wrong here them needing more room) they like temps @ about 80'f a filter is better dont have to do as many water changes then

When feeding bettas their stomach is only as big as her eye so if shes that small imo she only need about two of those pellets aday

Hope i helped :)
U got a picture of her we may be able to sex her unless shes that small but a picture would help :)

Wow that was specific.

I'm looking for helpful advice. Not criticism. I am aware that its a living creature and deserves proper care, hence why I'm here. You could've worded that in a more positive tone.

Thank you for your help =]
I'm not sure she needs a heater, I keep her in the room with my reptiles which is the hottest room in the house, she is above my beardie who's tank is 110 on the warm side, about 80 on the cool side. So I assume her water would be in the mid 70's without a heater. If she needs more I have several under tank reptile heaters (like a heating pad) would that work?

What other care is needed, is there anything different for her than from an adult?

I only have large tanks above 30 gal, so getting another tank would have to wait until I had a chance to get to the store. I have a 1 gallon fish bowl thats free, but not permanently, I use it to quarantine baby Koi's before I add them to the big tank. How long will she be ok for in the vase?

Uummm not to my knowlede if shes eating the pellets then just keep up with that :) ive never treated a baby fish who will accept flake food differently to the adults :) they also dont like strong currents, gentle slow ones are best :)

Depends on how many golls or litres it is i have a betta box my brotgers betta is in temperaly its about 1litre and he will be ok untill i get another tank in the next two weeks so it should be ok for the next week or two :)

There was no criticism in my post, we all have to start somewhere and we dont all get things right first time!
Im sure we have all seen the size of the tanks / pots / cups that they keep bettas in and would like to save them all but the fact is this little guy is no better off in a vase than in the store. What if someone else had a nice little filtered 10 gallon setup ready to buy a betta? They might have brought that very fish and given it a great life.

IMO Your fish cannot continue to live in an unfiltered, unheated vase. I would choose an inexpensive 10 gallon tank, a filter, a heater (you might pick up a second hand bargain on ebay?) and eventually a few shrimpy tank mates! However, at the end of the day it is your fish and your choice!

Good luck whatever you choose!

She does need a heater to keep the temp constant. Fluctuations in temp will do her no good, will stress her and leave her open to illness.
If the heating matt can be set at a steady temp then I don't see why it wouldn't work but a bigger tank and a heater with a thermostat would be better for her.

You cant attach the heat mat on tge out side of ur tank ur tank will break with the heater rhing it also depends on where you live as long as the temp in that room is steady i dont think a heater will be nessasery unless her water temp isnt high enough

Filters are a must but not 100% needed more like 98% needed they can live without a fileter but will need 2 water changes aday and this would stress the poor thing out so it is a must
