hmm can anyone help me with the diet of Oscars?
I have treid to feed him to different things, Cichlid Pellets, and normal flake food.

He ignores the pellets, or eats them and spits them back out.
He eats the flakes, but sometimes spits them out.
I am starting to get worried for his health, and i want the best for my oscar.
He is still a baby, i got him two weeks ago.
Advice on oscars would be appreciated.

How big is his tank?

I heard Oscars like to sulk so maybe he's just in a mood.

^^ That says that they need a varied diet.

Cichlid pellets for their main diet.
They need live foods like crickets, insects, worms and sometimes feeder fish.
Beef Heart, Turkey Heart, Shrimp and krill are also very good.
Peas are good for constipation if they over eat.
Some people have luck with occasional greens like lettuce, zucchini and cucumber.

Good luck.

His ank is 45-50 gallons.
He does not really enjoy his pellets
i want to get some brine shrimp eggs, so i can feed him live shrimp

hi,

i have two and its best to feed lots of different things, i feed mealworms, cricketts, bloodworms, garden worms are a fav, raw prawns, frozen muscles, squid, chichlid gold, algae wafers hole (ment for plec's) if you feed pellet they become board as they are meat eaters!!!

i hope this help as im noe an expert :good:

i never had this trouble with my oscar when i first had him

They can sometimes become picky on what they eat, so you will need to feed him other foods to vary its diet.
Try things like:

muscles
cockles
crickets
locusts
worms (make sure they have not come in contact with any poisionous substances)
shrimp (like them live)
prawns
pellets (hikari gold seems to be the best)
peas (or any other greens he will take)

Most of these you can get from a supermarket, at a reasonable price. I went to get my oscar something new to try today, i bought him frozen smelt from maidenhead aquatics, they are around 2"-3" long and hes had 3 today, he seems to like them.

its trial and error really, depends what hes feeling like on the day, some days he will take anything he can fit into his mouth and other days he wont touch any foods.
Remember to vary the diet, your oscar will be much happier :good:

And another thing, i wouldn't feed your oscar feeder fish, they can be carrying diseases that can be passed on to your oscar, so avoid feeder fish.

Much like humans then.

They could have a weekly feeding routine.

muscles on monday
locusts on tuesday
worms on wednesday
peas n pellets on thursday
shrimp on friday
crickets on saturday
prawns on sunday

i will vary his diet between those now

Hi,

Can you post some pictures please.

We would all love to see your Oscar! :good: :good: :good:

Yes, i will get right on that.
you know oscars, all squrimy and jumpy, really hard not to get a pic that is blurred.hahahh
im worried about something i found on his side
ill have pics up real soon, so keep checking this forum for updates.

The best thing i have fed my two oscars is Tesco value smoked salmon its about £1.39 and will last my two oscars around a week. Doesnt make the water mirky or dirty and they practically snap yourfingers off eating it.

I also suggest giving them other foods like earth worms and tubifex so they dont develop hole in the head syndrome.

The following is my story of my oscar who wouldn't eat. I posted this more than a year ago:

I wanted to share my experience with my red Oscar because it may help some people who are thinking about what to feed them if they get one. Before I got him, I did a lot research and came away with the idea that they are easy to feed since they will eat almost enything. So, I got one, put him in the aquarium, let him get used to his surroundings, and then, about an hour later, tried to feed him. By the way, the other fish in the aquarium at the time were a silver dollar, a three-spot gourami, and a non-common pleco. I fed him cichlid pellets. He would suck one in his mouth and then spit it out. So, I tried shrimp pellets. He ignored them. So, I tried shelled peas. He spit them out. So, I tried flakes. He ignored them. He was swimming all around the aquarium not just hiding in one spot, so it wasn't that he was scared or being bullied. In fact, he was enjoying pushing the other fish around the tank. I thought when he got hungry enough he would eat...I was wrong because two weeks went by and still nothing. In desperation, I took some ham out of my freezer, thawed it, and put small slices in the aquarium and he finally ate something. He did not eat it all, but he definitely did not spit any out. But, since ham doesn't seem like a very healthy food for fish I tried shrimp. Cooked, peeled, deveined, expensive out of the freezer section at the grocery store shrimp. He finally lived up to the reputation that I had read so much about. When he was finished with his shrimp he would knock at the top of the aquarium begging for more. So, I fed him shrimp for about a month and all was well. He was growing and looking healthy. I decided to try some shelled peas again and this time he would grab them off the gravel and actually would chew them up, but would spit a lot of it out again. But it was more than he did before. I tried cichlid pellets again and he ate them! He used to spit them out immediately. Then I tried flakes and the ate them all! He would go up to each flake on the surface of the water and eat them one by one! Finally, he was totally acting like the Oscars I had read about before I got him. Now he is about seven inches long and probably getting near a year old. I wanted to share this experience since I had read nothing like this while researching them.
