Hey everyone,

I have a 55 US gallon aquarium that I'll be setting up soon. It's got two 10-gallon sized hoods instead of one 48-inch one because the top frame's got a divider going down the middle to hold the two sides together.

Anyway, I'm set on having live plants. The problem is, I spent every last dime I had on the actual tank, filters, heaters, substrate, etc, so I can't get one of those fancy compact lighting systems that cost hundreds of dollars... and the flourescent bulbs I have for my hoods are only 15W each.

So basically, what I'm asking is, is it possible to have descent lighting with a "regular" hood or am I doomed to fake plants (eww)? :/ Are there any bulbs made for regular hoods that would provide better lighting? I've searched and I can't find any. :(

A fluorescent light tube powered by a control unit is what most people use for their tanks. You'd be surprised at all the lovely plants you can keep using moderate lighting... check out Tropica's site http://www.tropica.com for specific information on plant species and their requirements.
You can buy control units designed for two light tubes, which would obviously double the output. Here are examples:

A company called 'Arcadia' make reliable, cheap light starter kits with an external ballast -and flouro bulbs to match them... ideal for attaching to an existing 'lightless' tank lid...
