Sorry to anyone who is getting bored of people asking for fish selection help, but i have a few questions

I have a 35 gallon tank well planted and am thinking of having in it

9 x Cardinal tetra

2 x Honey gourami

1 x male Betta

5 x Cory Catfish

first of all do you think these fish will get on?

and secondly im not sure if there will be enough fish on show most of the time, will my Betta just hide away in the plants all day along with the Cory's leaving just the Gourami and Tetra on view?

first set up looking for advice, thanks for your help

The betta's really shouldn't be put into a community setting. Their are certain cases where they have worked, but I wouldn't reccomend it. The cories can get very active at times and the tetra's should always give you something to look at too... It doesn't sound overstocked to me at all in a 35.

I agree with iairj about the betta, particularly as bettas and gouramis are both labyrinth fish, so could well get territorial and aggressive with each other. I would get a trio of honey gouramis instead, one male and 2 females.

ok so maybe i ll skip the Betta add another Honey Gourami, and then get 3 Guppies (1 male)

do you think this would work out better

no, well i dont mind if they do breed but not bothered, would nt like them to eat their fry though

Well mine were breeding but the fry were gettin eaten but as soon as i introduced moss to my tank i have been over run by them. Soon im gonna have to pass some on. So if you do want them add moss, otherwise dont. It doesnt take long to have a tank full of guppies.

as an aside is there a shark that would go with these fish? ok not strictly a shark but you know a fish that look like a shark, a red tailed black shark etc

as a reminder

2 Honey Gourami

9 Carinal tetra

3 Guppy (1 male)

5 Cory Catfish

The red tailed sharks are lovely and would go nicely, they do nip anything with a red tail but should be ok. They do reach a nice big size, my one was 5 1/2" when he got to four years old but I gave him to my father in law, i seem to stocking his tanks lately, lol. How long is the tank btw

I don't see anything wrong with your original stocking list. Of course, it depends on the betta whether it will work, but I've seen many successful communities with a male betta. Anyway, if you do go for guppies instead and don't want them to breed go for all male then. I would make it 3-5 male guppies (males only) instead of a mixed group of 3.

As for a shark, IMO red tail sharks would be too rambunctious and would definately not work with the neons or guppies or the honey gouramis or a betta. A red tail shark might be okay when they are small, but I wouldn't trust him when he gets older. Look into a flying fox instead though, they are very peaceful and have that cool freshwater shark look.

tanks 32 inches long

it seems there is a bit of a split opinion about Betta's in community tanks, i take it that it just depends on temperment of the individual Betta
