Well what is your spending limit?
Fluval 305-405 or the older cheaper models 304-404, are good but they are not 100% bypass free. I fight with mine on that issue. Modified it a little bit to help. I have a 304, it does not have a large area for bacterial growth which is something I look for in filtration. Chemical filtration I don't use. I just use the heavy sponge filter pads, filter fiber (finer filtration) and bacterial.
My next filter will be a Rena FilStar Xp4. With 0% bypass and plenty of storage for biological filtration, I find it being the best. It comes with a micron filter as well to scrub the water.
For some reason, my reading and pricing on the Ehiem filters never impressed me. you pay A LOT for them. Although those Ehiem ecco filters are priced pretty low. I have only heard 50/50 review with any Ehiem filter. Not to satisfying when I usually get the bad luck.
I have not used the Rena or Ehiem filters at all. This is just from what I have read and decided.
