We're having an issue with our new little girl Darya... She's barely eating, and lays at the bottom of the tank or at the top back corner and barely swims around. When we saw her at the pet store one of the things that grabbed us was that she was always on the move. It looks to me like she's.... Depressed or something, as I don't see any other signs of disease on her. Any thoughts?

What are u feeding her? she may be alittle depressed if no other symptoms or if u havent had her long she is still adjusting to things I would try to feed her a tasty treat like blood worms or brine shrimpo and see if that makes her happier but do nat over feed the bvlood worms or brine shrimp once a week as treats only over feeding of these can cause dropsy.

Right now we're feeding her Hikari Betta Bio-Gold Fish Food, though I have been known to sneak her a couple of freeze dried blood worms in the morning.. I couldn't just be a paranoid new parent, but Constantine (my wife's betta) has never acted this way so I just have to make sure.

hard to diagnose on the internet because we can only go by what you know or notice. Try and see if you can get a clear picture of her to post on the forum, but until then, answering these questions may help

1. how long have you had her?
2. what size container is she in?
3. how often do you change the water?
4. how often, and how much do you feed her, including treats?
5. is there anything in her tank for her to hide in/among?
6. Is she breathing heavily, and/or is the inside of her gills red?
7. any white flecks that look like grains of salt?
8. any fuzzy or cottony looking patches?
9. does her belly look abnormally swollen?
10. if you look at her from above, can you see scales sticking out like a pinecone?
11. is she refusing food?
12. is she having any difficulty swimming (ie: upside down, sideways, etc.)?
13. is she flicking against anything in the tank (walls, gravel, plants, etc.)?
14. does she have any other tank mates?
15. do any of her fins seem to be shredded, red (unless she is naturally red), or disintegrating?
16. have you seen her poop, and if so, what color was it?

it may be nothing to worry about, there are many reasons for bettas to act the way you are describing. Some are very hard to deal with and others are nothing at all

I've had her for about a week now. She's in a five gallon tank with a small filter and I change the water about twice a week. I feed her about one or two pellets when I get up, one or two when I get home and before I go to bed. I remove any that she doesn't eat (Which has been about 75% of the food at this point). She has no tank mates, no flared gills, she breathes fine, no specks and isn't bloated. I have seen her poop, though I can't really remember what colour it was, I think it was brownish red? She has started to act a little more normal today, she earlier was swimming through her rock, under the wood, then back to the rock, resting for a couple minutes then doing it again. She's acting alltogether a lot more like our other betta now :) It was just a little weird at first because Constantine was active from the very first day and never once refused any amount of food. Thanks for the replies

okay, well then i would say she was probably upset by the change in her environment. It's common for bettas to sulk when they're first introduced to their new homes. good luck with her :)
