I just recently bought a balck veil angel from this fish store and when i got him home one of his gills were red and he had some white spots over him. The spots airnt big enought to be ich but they look like bruses. Please help.

Also I just noticed that his top fin looks like its been bitin off or something.

Is he laboured breathing, plus do you mean the spots are not small enought to be ith,can you describe the spots a bit more, and the fin does it have any red streaking through it or red edges.

On the skin do they look like inflamed blood vessels.

He isnt breathing hard or gasping for air and no I put him in a hostpital tank but the spots are smooth (probably internal) and are about as big as the fishes eyes. No from what I can see he doesnt have any red streaks on his fins. My father said that they are semi-aggresive there was probably another angel that fought him. That probably answers why part of his top fin is missing. :/ Im most worried about its gills thou.

Red swollen gill can mean bad water quality or parasites, like gill flukes, bacterial gill rot.

Black angels mark easier than any fish I've ever seen. Blacks pairing up look like a train wreck, white spots & gashes everywhere. If there was any aggression, as there probably was seeing as part of a fin is missing, white marks are to be expected.

The red gill could be from aggression, or it could be a short gill plate. If the fish has a normal respiration rate, & it's only one gill, I wouldn't be worried. If it's battle damage, the gill plate will probably grow back, if it's a short gill plate, which is a birth defect, it won't.

Water changes every other day, & a little melafix will help the damage. Often just the water changes is enough. Try to remove anything from the tank that is even close to sharp or abrasive, or other marks will show up. I've had blacks get spooked, zip behind a piece of driftwood, & come out sideswiped. They heal up in a few days, it looks a lot worse than it is.
