hi everyone, im concerned that im not doning something, and that i should be something. the reason is that my little bro. has a v-tail betta, and as soon as we got him he started making bubble nest, with out a female around, is that normal? a couple days ago my sister bought a female betta not sure what type, but they're right next to each other but in different tanks, the male will look at the female alot and flare up, the female takes a look at male once in a while but just swims around. so what should i do, should i try breeding ? please help i will post pics soon. /thanks

Hi and welcome

It's perfectly normal for males to make bubblenests and is usually a sign that they are happy. Breeding is quite complicated and time consuming plus you need to be able to house possibly hundreds of babies and then have an outlet to sell them too. If you look at the FAQ section at the top of the page, there is section on breeding and rearing fry which has lots of information on it. :good:

You might need to move the girl so she cant see the male. Some of my girls get eggy when they can see a boy and mopey as well. Watch her for breeding stripes.

For a male to spawn you would need a larger tank and several females for him.
why would a male need several females? its a betta not a guppy

Well you dont put one female in with a male. You need "atleast" 4 or 5 females for one male Betta.

Erm you don't put ANY females in with a male unless you have conditioned them for breeding. Once conditioned you put in ONE female. There is no situation where you'd want any more than one female in with a male.

where are you getting your info from??

With one female chances are the male will bully her, with several females the male is not as aggressive and will choose one to spawn. This is what I've seen done.

dont talk such utter crap

U NEVER SPAWN MORE THAN ONE FEMALE WITH ONE MALE

as daz said earlier, theyre not guppies!!

When spawning the female is introduced in a chimney within the tank so he can see her, they flirt, he makes a nest etc etc, then she is released and if all goes to plan the spawn, she releases the eggs, and the male collects them and puts them in the nest, the female is then removed

so tell me why u need 4 females???

It does my brain in when people come on here talking utter bollox about stuff they kno nothing about

i appreciate that you say youve seen it done but please dont give mindless info as advice to someone who needs our help!!!! the idea of this is out of place and even though the tradition way of spawning isnt set in stone anymore this way is ONE WAY that should never be advised.

also the bullying if you take the time to research is actually whats called the courtship, without the courtship you wouldnt get them to spawn. if more than 1 female is used the female of the highest pecking order is likely to attack the other females.

yes i second this,, before i knew better and at the illdavise of my lfs i had 3 female with each male ,,, if the males didnt beat on the girls the girls fought with each other,, and the ladies actually killed one of the males... not pretty,, and not a good way to try to get babies.

Hi
Can i just point out to losC519 that giving advice, which is so so wrong can lead to someone having real problems. Look at this this way, If the op had just read your post and signed off, they woudn't know what a load of rubbish it was and may have gone out and spent their money on 4/5 females.
There is really no excuse for giving information out which is wrong, particularly about this subject as every week someone asks whether they can keep males and females together. And they always get the same response.

Sorry guys but this is what I've seen done a few times, when the female is chosen all the others are removed. Didnt mean to insult any of u.
