what else you got in the tank? also you could use more tufa and you could try ocean rock or something like that.

:good:

just a few land snail shells, some plants, and a fake rock cave. is the ocean rock just called ocean rock, or does it have a "real" name? In case I can't find some of it, what else could I use?
Is this normal, for hte ph to bounce around like this?
Thanks!

not unless your planting the tank, which your probably not as your going for high pH.

:good:

ocean rock will not alter your PH levels at all, plenty of tuffa rock should do the job but failing that, bicarbonate of soda will do the trick, not something Iv'e used as my water is ideal for malawis. :good:

go to your local fish shop and get some coral gravel.fill a basket from your external with the stuff, then,as your water is filtered through the coral gravel,it should stabilise your ph to approx 8.my brother in law had a similar issue and this was the only thing that worked.i'm sure one of the more scientifically minded members will come on and explain in more detail, but this is an excellant way of sorting the problem

Your not fishless cycling your tank ? My PH rose to 9.0 before settling back down at 8.0 today.
There weren`t any chemicals added to the tank or anything that could of been on the rocks ?
Were the rocks dusty at all ?

:X fish!!!

your in SC, go out and find yourself some dang limestone, the britts posting arent aware that your'e probably sitting on a gold mine over there of limestone and even some holey rock that can be found in landscape centers. NOT to mention the amount of coral thats available to you :p

silly!! use your resources around ya!!

Well, I just tested again. In front of where it comes out of the filter, it tested at 6.0. Further down the tank it tested at 6.8-7. WTH????
What does limestone look like? (I know, go ahead and laugh at me!) I've not seen any around here that I knew what it was, kwim?
BTW, my tank has been cycled for almost a year now. There are a few danios in it to keep it going until I switch out.

the only thing your switching to is fish that like that low ph!!!!

grab the yellow pages and look for LANDSCAPE MATERIALS

I'm sure you've seen them, huge lots with great big piles of gravel, sand, rocks and railroad ties, boulders, planters on huge scales etc. THATS where you need to call. ask them for LIMESTONE

HOLEY ROCK, HONEY COMB it's also called, then call your lfs and ask for a bag of crushed coral.

all of the above will buffer your ph up

It would be more cost effective to use baking soda but lets not go there yet, way too much work if you can manage it with substrate & stone.
