hi just got breeding pair of angels only the male has his mouth in the sucking position as i would describe it its been like it since geting it thisafternoon is he ill?

he never leaves his mrs allways with her, dont know if this is wired but he kind of darts towards her then stops she does the same?

First, fill out the usual blurb for us;

Tank size:
pH:
ammonia:
nitrite:
nitrate:
kH:
gH:
tank temp:

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior):

Volume and Frequency of water changes:

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank:

Tank inhabitants:

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration):

Exposure to chemicals:

Digital photo (include if possible):

Second, how did you acclimate the pair, and are they from different water parameters than you have ?

I would keep the tank lit by room light for a day or two, and feed lightly. Even though they are a pair, they are going to have to establish their territory all over again, this may involve some pairing behavior, which it sounds like this may be.

hi sorry in delay been testing water kh and gh dont know how do i test them i have liquid test and it dont cover this hope the details below are usefull
many thanks

Tank size: 130 L
pH:7.2
ammonia: 1
nitrite:0.50
nitrate:2
kH: dont know
gH: dont know
tank temp:29

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior): wired mouth mouth allways open like its sucking

Volume and Frequency of water changes: 130l tank change 30%weekly

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank:???

Tank inhabitants:????

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): slate and the breeding pair of angles

Exposure to chemicals: none

angles are the olny fish in the tank ,oh and a 2 cm plec hides under the slate

How long hasd the tank been set up? Any amount of Ammonia is dangerous. Do a 50% water change everyday to get rid of it. I would also suggest getting some Amquel Plus, it removes ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite. Also, if you only have 2 nitrate, then with you ammonia an dnitriter level's as is, then you are probably going through a cycle. Do you treat your water?

Your ammonia & nitrite should be at zero, how long has this tank been cycled for? Nitrites inhibit a fish's blood system from processing O2 properly, this may be a bit of the reason for the open mouth. I would be doing daily 25% water changes until these readings go down, the air bar in the picture is a good thing; increased aeration will raise the O2 level, helping with the nitrite issue.

when you say treat my water how do you mean? like using safeguard when waterchangeing yes if thats wot u mean tank been set up a week its not brand new i used 50% water from my change out of other tank and 50 % new safe guarded, got tank from a friend no chemicals used init?

tested water was all on when first set water up since puting fish in i had problems i had 8 juvenile angels in before these 2 they were fine just problems with these and water levels gone up

The tank is being cycled at the moment. Old tank water does not hold any bacteria, so it won't do anything. Switch the foam media in the filters, this is where the bacteria is. Increase water changes to, as said, 25 percent daily. Ammonia will only keep increasing till' you start doing more water changes.

I might say, I believe that if ammonia is too high, bacteria is killed off? So, do a big 50% water change asap and then add the old filter media. Keep up with 25% changes daily, for at least a few weeks.

hi thanks for the help done 2 water changes today so far first thismorning took out 40 litres
my reading were
AMO.2.0
PH.7.6
NITRATE.20
NITRITE.0.50

THISARTERNOON DONT ANOTHER 40L CHANGE USING SAFE GUARD FORGOT TO MENTION,READINGS ARE
AMO.1.0 -2.0 THE COLOUR WAS INBETWEEN? TO DARK TO BE THE FIRST BUT TO LIGHT FOR THE SECOND COLOUR
PH.7.4
NITRATE.5.0 -10? INBETWEEN AGAIN TO DARK TO BE THE FIRST BUT TO LIGHT FOR THE SECOND COLOUR
NITRITE.0.25

WE HAVE USED AMO LOCK CANT REMEMBER IF I MENTIONED I PUT IT IN LATE LAST NITE A FRIEND WHO WORKS IN LFS COME ROUND AND GAVE IT TO US SAID WOULD HELP THE AMO BUT STILL SHOW UP ON TESTS?

SOZ FOR CAPS

ALSO ANOTHER QUESTION THEY SEEM TO BE SETTLING IN NOW NOT JUMPY WHEN YOU WALK PAST TANK AND WHEN LIFTING LID TO TAKE WATER FOR SAMPLE THE COME TO THE TOP AS IF I WAS FEEDING THEM LAST NITE WE FED BRINESHRIMP FROZEN AND HE NEVER ATE NE BUT SHE DID ,TODAY HIS MOUTH HAS SLIGHTLY MOVED TO EAT FROZEN BLOODWORM THEN OPENED UP AGAIN.HIS GILLS ARE MOVING FASTER THAN THE FEMALES ALSO,

ANOTHER QUESTION ALL MORNING AND DAY THEY HAVE BEEN DOING THIS DANCE TYPE THING LIKE FLINCHING TOWARDS EACHOTHER THEN SHE HAS BEEN GOING FOR HIM NOT BITEING HIM BUT AS IF SHES TRYING THEN HE DOES IT BACK TO HER WHATS GOING ON THERE,THEY HAVE COME HEAD TO HEAD A FEW TIMES LIKE KISSING GOURAMI'S DO WHEN FIGHTING BY KISSING ITS THE ONLY WAY I CAN DESCRIBE ,BUT THEY DONT ACTUALLY LOCK LIPS??
WHATS THIS ABOUT ALSO

AS I SAID ANY ADVICE IS GOOD ADVICE I AINT GOT A CLUE THANKS FOR YOUR TIME

Ammo Lock converts ammonia to ammonium, a substance harmless to fish at the levels found in an aquarium, but used the same as ammonia by your bio filtration. It will still show up as ammonia on many tests.

Continue with the daily water changes, until your ammonia & nitrites are at zero. The behavior you are seing is common for pairs, I had a pair that would lip lock every morning when you turned the light on, they were fine if you left the tank lit with room light.

O THANKS I WILL DO ANOTHER CHANGE 2 NITE

WOUD YOU ADVISE SOME PH DOWN TREATMENT? AS ITS QUITE HIGH FOR ANGELS?> WAS TOLD THEY NEED SOFT PH

Do not attempt to adjust the pH, there is much more to it than adding some chemicals to tap water. You will create pH swings that can be anywhere from irritating to deadly for your fish. I breed angels by the thousands, tap water pH is 7.7, fairly hard water. The only thing I add to the water is dechlorinator, with the exception of hatching tanks, which get a mix of antifungals & such.
