My beta fish, Poseidon, lives in a one gallon bowl which I change every five days... I don't have the room for a tank but I give him the best life I can. I've had him for about sixteen months.

He's now been sick for six weeks. At first, he had a very bad case of pop eye. I treated him with Melafix, and amazingly it worked. His eye is back to normal size, but it's still cloudy.

His fin rot started on his body around his gills and by the eye that was affected by the pop eye about three weeks ago. I initially was treating him with Pimafix, but his condition got worse and his tail started to rot.

So I gave him a five day dosage of Maracyn which ended two days ago. The rot on his tail stopped progressing (there is a black lining left over but it isn't moving up his tail at all) and his energy improved immensely. Now, he still has one sore on his side near his eye, one on the top of his head, and his eye is still cloudy. He has slowed down again without the medication but his symptoms don't seem to be getting WORSE, they're just at a stand still. He is very interested in food but seems to be having trouble actually eating, even though in the end he always manages to eat at least one pellet.

What can I do? Should I give him a second five day dose of Maracyn, which seemed to be working? I don't know if his symptoms were supposed to be completely gone by the end of the treatment? Or maybe the fin rot has been eradicated but his sores just need time to heal?

PLEASE help. I'll do whatever I can for my fish, I love him to pieces.

is 1 gallon enough for a beta ?
also is there somthing in the water causing this ??
im no pro and i hope the little fella perks up soon

Is it possible for you to get him a slightly bigger tank? Even if it's only 2-3 gallons? I'm sure the extra space would be appreciated and would also mean there will be less fluctuation in water quality.

After all the problems he's had, there will be visible signs of his fin rot for a little while yet. His fins may never completely recover from it.

If he is interested in food, then that is a good sign. My advice would be to just keep an eye on him for now, especially while he eats and see if his behavior is worsening each day or getting better.

Sounds to me like he's just taken quite a battering lately and that it will take a little while for him to make a full recovery. Hope he gets better for you

Also, try to do a water test if you can..

Am I right in thinking the average life span of a beta is only 24 months? How old might he have been when you got him?

Cathy

The rot around the gills you describe could be burns from ammonia, a water change every 5 days isn't sufficient, every day would be better, as above a larger tank would be beneficial too, everyone has space for a 3-5 gallon.
