I have 6 adult platies. 3 Tuxedo and 3 Wagtail. They had a whitespot outbreak while in quarentine (only in the Tuxedos) and were treated with Protozin and Melafix which cleared it up well. That was about 4 weeks ago. A week ago they were transfered into my main tank with my gouramis and Plecs.

This morning when we got up the 3 tuxedo platies were looking slightly bloated (though they have always been tubby) and had white stuff on them. They were immediately transfered back to the Q-tank and treated with Melafix and Anti Internal Bacteria (the Interpet one) Now one (the male) is literally on his last fins, swimming upsidedown, cloudy eyes etc. The other 2 are still about the same as this morning and the wagtails seem ok so far although we transfered them aswell as a precaution.

So what could it be? What could have brought it on in the space of abut 9 hours as they had NO outward symptoms last night?

Water stats in the main tank are virtually perfect, 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrite, 0.2 Nitrate, PH 7.2 (tapwater PH is this too) Temp 24 degrees.

Water in the Q-Tank is ok too, although the temp is higher (28degrees) the fish were floated in a bowl to acclimatise befre putting them in.

Of course I am worried about my other fish, especially my spiney eels (about 3inches long, had to be shifted into the main tank out of the q-tank) Should I add anything to the main tank? Was thinking Tonic Salt and have already addd a half dose of Melafix.

Please Help. Otherhalf is euthanising the male platy now (clove oil) as he is suffering.

Bloating would indicate an internal bacterial infection, "white stuff" depending on what it looks like is usually columnaris, while cloudy eyes is literally an external bacterial infection called "cloudy eye". You are treating your fish with the right meds, although if they have columnaris, pimafix would probably be more effective than melafix at getting rid of this (anti fungus and finrot by Interpet is also very good against columnaris).
Tonic salt will not really be effective at fighting any of these diseases though, so i wouldn't bother with it.

How many gallons is the main tank and what other fish do you have in it and how many plus their sizes roughly?

Thanks.

Just been out and got Primafix and Tonic Salt (figured it wouldn't do any harm.) Lost 2 of the Platies before going out (the male and 1 female) The other female looks a bit better though still a bit bloated. She has no white stuff (it looked like very fine cotton strands) and is eating. Fingers crossed for her and the other Platies. Going to add a dose of Primafix after a water change this evening.

The main tank is 105l and has a pair of Opaline Gouramis, a pair of Thicklipped Gouramis, 4 baby Kissing Gouramis adn 2 baby Plecos. It now has 6 Neon Dwarf Rainbow Fish and 2 Spiney Eels (babies) as well so is WAY overstocked. (I have another 105l tank and a 145l tank cycling though) It is the Eels ('scaleless') that are sensitive to common medicines adn some algae eaters are sensitive to copper based medication hence not wanting to add these to that tank.

I forsee daily water changes ahead to maintain the water quality in there!
