The new gourami i purchased as a rescue has been fairly badly savaged....
Fins shredded, caudal and pectoral...
Scales eaten away from top of fish.
I have removed the fish, no hospital tank (it has a betta in  ) but if he/she stays in my community tank overnight i'd assume its a guaranteed death, i've added a general tonic to (hopefully) help with any fin/scale regeneration prevent further illness.
Any tips would be seriously appreciated.
Other thought, would salts help in this case with the regeneration, or would that just help prevent further infection and prove uncomfortable for the fish.
Sorry.
Many thanks for any replies...

Most important thing with physical damage like this is keeping the water conditions as good as possible. Make sure there's no ammonia or nitrite and consider daily water changes.

So long as the fish is eating ok then physical damage should regenerate without too much issue. Many of my fish have shredded their fins and taken huge clumps of scales off when shooting around the tank, it always clears up pretty quick, just keep an eye on appetite.

Cheers AndyWg
Joking aside thanks very much! managed to section off a small portion of my hospital/betta tank, meds in, water change to follow (daily no prob as i have loaches and perform daily(ish) with them) plus a new cheapo tank tomorrow to give him some space.
He's not feeding too well but i assume/hope thats just due to the stress, pic to follow in case there is any physical symptoms i've missed, and its something more than simple bullying.
Many thanks mate (what a sycophant) :good:

Just noticed the concave (?) shape of his forehead, could this indicate any other problems, ie; his illness equaled lethargy which resulted in his being damaged by other fish?

Doesn't look too bad, though I am unsure on the head shape. Tried to compare it to my gourami, but I can't see the thing at the mo. The wounds all look superficial so I'd just keep up with the water changes, maybe some tea tree oil based medicine if you feel that way inclined. Monitor for 3-5 days and look for signs of improvement in attitude and appetite.

The poor guy also looks to be constipated. Try feeding deshelled peas, if it does not eat them stop all feeding for 3-4 days then make some variations in it diets. What are you currently feeding it? Also have you determined what has caused all this suffering (other tank mates maybe).

No he's not constipated, just pooing. I was planning on tresating him and his fellow rescuee for parasites in the next week or so.
He's actually (probably can't tell from the picture) quite skinny.
What leads you to think he is constipated? I may have missed something?
He's being fed live daphinia, freeze dried daphinia, tetra pro veg and pea in various quantities, nips at my plecos courgette and being a gourami grazes on plant and algae, (not all at the same time i try to feed a varied diet) i'm sure he's not being overfed.
He's also had a good crack at a defrosted prawn this evening.
Yes, other tank mates are certainly responsible for his condition, he has been moved

Usually a sting of fecies hanging from the anus is a sign of constipation, espeacialy when it is in sections resembling sausage links. Even worse these symptoms are also a sign of internal parisities. Being that you seem to be feeding very well and as you mentioned the fish appears to be on the thin side and not bloated, I would have to agree with internal parisities.

A sign of constipation is not being able to defecate.

Internal parasites is usually diagnosed from white stringy faeces, and in the pic it looks pretty dark.
