This morning I was in bed when I looked down on my floor and there was one of my killies that I recieved in the mail yesterday, I jumped up and put her back in her tank and now she's just trying to jump out and then she went over to the filter output and it shot her down into one of the sharp plastic plants I have in there, Now she has all these wounds and I dont know what to do, I dont have a hospital tank to put her in but I do have some tupperware containers. What should I do, she cant die I need her for breeding and I've only had her for a day!!!

I'd start using melafix to treat her wounds and for the shock and hope she pulls through. Also get a decent lid for teh tank and try and find some way to slow the filter output down so she's not getting blasted around (think there's a pinned topic in the betta section on doing this) take out any plants or decor that she could hurt herself on so she's not gonna hurt herself anymore and keep your fingers crossed.

:/

good luck

Should I treat the whole tank because its got a healthy male and female in there and I dont want to jeapordize their health. She doesnt look like she's gonna make it through the next hour but I'll see if my dad can go pick up some melafix and bring it back.

Melafix is only an antibacterial which will help the wounds from becoming infected.

I shouldnt harm your other fish in the tank - essentially its just tea tree oil.

Use it as instructed on the bottle then do a 25% water change after completing the course.

If the injuries are severe - it sounds as if they might be - then it doesnt look good. If you dont thinks she's going to make the next hour, then its probably not worth adding the melafix.

It may be more humane to consider euthanasia - not pleasant, but may be best for the fish.

yup, the melafix won't harm the healthy fish.

Sadly if you really don't think she's gonna make it the most humane thing to do is euthanise the fish. If she's really that ill and obviously in pain then putting her out of her misery may well be the best course. That's really down to you to decide though. :/

Well actually as soon as I posted that I didnt think she would make it through the hour I went upstairs to look and she's actually swimming now and her pupils are getting big like the other females are, and at least on her right side I cant see any wounds so I'm thinking she might've just given me a scare because she was being pushed up against that plastic plant which I took out right away but maybe what I thought were wounds was just the coloring of the gills because the other female has red coloring on her gills.

phew glad to hear it. I've had fish get out of the tank before and they are shocked and take an hr or two to come around. I'd still treat with melafix (or depending on if the other inhabitants can cope with it or not) add a little salt to the water. Both of these really help to perk a fish up when they've had a bad time.

Ok so she finally turned around to let me see that she has 3 small wounds on her left side. One at the base of her tail, one in the top half of her body, and one right up next to her gills and on top of her head theres some discoloration. Do you think it would help if I put some salt in there since I dont have any in there like say around 2 teaspoons. Its a 5.5 gallon tank by the way.

That sounds a lot more positive.

I would probably go with the melafix then, just to try and help things along and minimise any future complications if there are some minor wounds.

I think it's 1 teaspoon of salt for every 10g of water. I wouldn't add the salt direct to the tank, get a jug or something scoop out a bit of tank water, stir the salt into it until it's all disolved then put it back in the tank.

Ok so I'm going to add some salt right now and then get my dad to pick up some melafix on the way home. Sound good?

Edit: oh 1 teaspoon for every 10? In the killifish book I got that was written by the woman I got the fishes froms husband it says 4 for every 10 gallons so I thought 2.

yup, hopefully the combination will bring her round.

make sure after a few days when she's better and you've stopped treating you do a fairly decent size water change, and if possible add some carbon to your filter to remove the meds. They won't do your fish any serious harm staying there but I always think if you can then it's best to get them out. Then if you need to treat for something else you've no risk of overdosing or the medicines combining and having a bad reaction to each other.

:)

edit: OK maybe go with that then, that's just what your meant to use when using salt to treat for whitespot, I figured it'd be around the same. If you've a decent book specifically about the fish you have in the tank I'd go with it. Or maybe add 1 now, leave it a bit and if it's obviously making them feel better add another. :)

Ok I'm gonna add 1 teaspoon now and then wait and see.

Ok I added one teaspoon of salt so now I guess I just wait. I called my dad and told him to pick up the melafix for me and a few other things because I have eggs in the spawning mop just checked it and you need meth. blue because it'll dye any fungussed or infertile eggs and some aquari-sol for...some reason so If my female doesnt make it ,which I'm being positive that she will, I could take the female from the male in the other tank and put her with this male and then take one of the female offspring of this spawn(if I get any) and put it with the other male but hopefully I wont have to do that.
