hi anyone know whats wrong with my platy? just got him yesterday and he looked fine, now he's all red and veiny, im thinking septicemia or something?
if so, is he just going to die, is he a threat to other fish etc everyone else is fine and nitrate and amonia levels are good. but hes just sitting on the bottom of the tank. :(

you can see him here:

I'm afraid I've no idea what it is, but personally, I'd get him out of the community tank quickly and get him back to the shop. It might be a good idea not to swap him for other platties from the same tank either unless you're confident it's a one off.

it does look like septiceamia, and if he was healthy from the shop then I would be checking water quality in your tank first.
Can you test for ammonia and nitrites?
If not then take the platy and a sample of water back to the shop and ask them to test it for you. If it comes back the water in your tank is clear then the shop should swap him but if your levels show any ammonia or nitrites then you might have a hard time getting him replaced.
Did you buy any other fish at the same time?
Whats your current stocking level?
Its always a good idea to quarantine new fish.

i tested for amonia and nitrates and are both 0. well you know as low as zero as my test kit wil show.

have a 10 gallon tank
2 cory julii
3 zebra danios
3 guppys
1 other platy ( got him at the same time yesterday and he is doing fine)

ok he died. whatever it was got him quick. he was fine and then dead within 2 1/2 hours.

It could be that he was already ill when you got him but looked fine at the time then the stress of being moved could have triggered the infection to spread! It is such a shame that he died!

How long and how did you go about acclimatising him to the tank? Was his transport bag from the lfs jostled around at all in the journey to your tank or experienced any drops/rises in temperature ?

he had a brown paper bag over the plastic one, and i tried my best to keep it as still as possible while my friend drove. acclimatised for about 30-40 minutes. i got him yesterday morning and he looked great eating and swimming normally until this afternoon then it all happened in 2 hours. hm

p.s this is my other platy... my guppy is totally obsessed with it. right from the second i put the bag in it wont stop looking. all the other fish have checked it out but then got on with their own things but this guppy wont leave him alone. he also constantly swims stuck on one of my other guppies, never leaving his side. any idea why??? its irritating to watch! lol stresses me out.

I can't tell from your photo because it's kind of blurred, but you're sure it was a male platty ? (lower fin has a gonopodium if male instead of a normal fin - did I spell that right ?). I've had a male guppy harrass a female platty before constantly and ended up putting female guppies in to give her some peace.

Male Guppies harrassing each other is normal behaviour. It can lead to some fin nipping. Again, the way to stop this is to put some female Guppies in, but then you have the problem of what to do with all the guppy fry! (n.b, don't just put one Guppy female in, because she'd be driven to distraction).
