hello there.
I rescued a Betta from my lfs as he was looking stressed.
He has gotten worse at home...his fins have become sticky, lumpy and paler, plus this morning his finns seem bloodstreaked.
He is a marble crowntail, multi coloured blue green, with red underbeard fins ( can't remember their name, sorry. )
So Ice, is such a beauty, anyone got any ideas what is wrong with him, and how I treat him. At the moment he is in a 1 gallon hospital tank
temp 24
amm 0
nitrites 0
nitrates 0
I have been performing twice daily water changes, as there is no filter. i did have decor in with him, but removed it whilst cleaning last night
He stays at the bottom and comes up for air every once in a while. He is still eating mini pellets 2 a day
when he swims he looks a little shimmying, and a tiny bit jerky, and can't hold his self in the water coloumn when the water moves...he floats with the water so to speak

thanks x

Strange as red streaks in fins can show as Ammonia poisoning.

Inactive at bottom and listless behavour also says "water quality" but you have been changing regularly and your tests show clear. I'm assuming you tested just before the water change to how dirty the water had become.

Awwww, poor thing...

His fins look like they have a bit of fin rot, which is a bacterial issue - and from the pic of him lying on the bottom he looks quite depressed and disinterested in everything. Bettas can suffer depression of sorts and "sulk" when they are unhappy or sick.

Firstly, I would try to make his home a bit more appealing - some leafy plants for him to rest on/under (soft, silky artificial plants with broad leaves are good). He may also be unhappy with the food he's being given - so try to liven that up a bit with a variety of different things e.g. a few bloodworms, baby brine shrimp, daphnia etc - but be sure not to overfeed.

I would also use some medication for his finrot - Myxazin is good for that.

Regards, Athena

no advice..just wanted to ask how he is? He looks really dull and depressed :( Did they say anything at the LFS when you bought him? i would question their tank he was in xxx

we actually lost him a few days ago. we had told the lady in the lfs we thought he was sick...she flicked the tank to get him to move and said "he's fine!"...well I knew he wasnt......
anyway, has gone to big pond in the sky, poor little man....it wasnt finrot, just a sort of slime coat problem from what i could see. tried to treat him for it, but to no avail

OK I take that last statement back. it probably was finrot, as my Jewel just passed away looking very simular to Ice. This is the 4th betta I have lost to finrot now....what am I doing wrong?

are you getting them all from the same source? do they look like that before you add them to the tank? (might be your water...and i dont mean water quality as faras ammonia etc, but something in the chemistry).
doesnt look like finrot. there are many things that can cause paling, clamped fins.thickened slimecoat and loss of appetite, generally external parasites. shame to see them all go so quickly!
do you share equipment between tanks (syphons, nets etc). If so best to sterilize them between in mild bleach solution then rinse in heavily dechlored water between tanks. Also, id always use quarantine when getting new fish before they go into the main tank. Youve had this issue for quite some time now from what i recall).
If you could start a thread of all the mishaps and symptoms over the course of these fish dying (with pics if possible) as well as stats for the tanks, might be helpful, although a daunting task.
im sorry you are having no luck with these guys :/
all the best
cheers

Agree with he above, if they are all coming from the same source and ending the same way despite having good quality water, it would indicate to me that the source of the fish is the issue. Its likely the tanks are all linked to a single or multiple external filters supplying and filtering the water to all fish in the store. If this is the case, than anything you buy from the same store is likely to come with the same issue if they are not removing them.

The fact that a flick of the tank and a little movement from the fish to them qualifies as fine, would confim the above for me....

Hope you get to the bottom of it soon. In the meantime, perhaps try buying a Splenden from elsewhere, and see how it gets on.
