I'll put it this way, braces are there for a reason, so yes it can and soon may well do. They reduce the bending of the front and back panes due to the weight of water. Removing them stresses the seams of your tank, risking the seams failing and the tank emptying onto the floor. My advise would be to do as above, strip the tank and replace the brace with a new one, before you find yourself replacing part or most of the tank/silicone work
