I understand what you are saying but the point is my old filter which was less efficient and powerful than this new one never had any problem coping with the water quality - ammonia and nitrite were always 0. How come I dont get any nitrite readings? Ive only had 1 day in the whole month where the nitrite reading was 0.25 
I am assuming that the bacteria will eventually catch up - surely it cant be more than another 3 or so weeks of daily water changes now that it has already been in for a month?
