hey all,

Im new to keeping tropical fish and on friday i added some fish to my 35 litre tank (3 guppy's(2 males 1 female), 2 sword tails (male and female) and some neon tetras).

Last night i noticed a build up of a white solid on the female sword tails lip. I know i can get some anti fungus medicine to cure this problem but i've read a lot of posts that say salt will cure this problem which will be a lot less hassle to the fish.

Being new to keeping tropical fish i don't have a clue on what salt to use, how much and where to get it from. I got told that sword tails don't mind a bit of salt in a tank but what about the other fish, i don't want to harm them or stress them out at all.

sorry if this question has been answered before but i have looked and cant find any thing

Thanks

What are your water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
On the fin does it look like a cauliflower, fluffy in appearance, strands, or slimey build up.

i havent got a test kit handy at the moment so i cant give you the readings, On the female sword tail the build up on her lip is cauliflowery but its getting better, but my main concern now is the male sword tail.

I noticed yesterday he was lien on the bottom of the tank a lot and not swimming round, then he would just go to the top of the tank and just float in the bubbles created by the air stone, now today his body is moving a lot but he's just stuck on the bottom of the tank, he did feed a bit just now but only when the food was in front of him, this is really erratic as yesterday morning he was flying up and down the side of the tank and now he hardly moves, the white spike on his fin seems to be going down but his behaviour is weird, if any one can help id be very grateful
Thanks

Leave the fish in the tank.
Tank cycling and sad to say it takes its toll on the fish they won't heal to well in a cycling tank.

Thanks, today the male looks a bit livelier but now ive noticed one of my neon tetra has a white build up around his top fin, could this be because of the high ammonia levels??

yup, all the symptoms of disease you are seeing are caused by ammonia and nitrite poisoning as a result of not fishless cycling. i'm so sorry the lfs advised you badly and now your fish are paying the price. you should prepare yourself that you might loose them, sad as it is.

keep up daily water changes and keep your fingers crossed.
