I purchased 2 (1m 1f) neon blue dwarf gouramis yesterday on my way home from work.

They went in the tank ok, a bit shy but by the time I went to bed they were swimming together and exploring etc, I did notice the male following my cupid cichlid around which amused me.

This morning I went to check them and I could not see the male, the female was swimming around happy. I finally located the male and he was down the side of some rocks between them and the glass, he was wedged basically. I could not see him moving so tapped the glass and he moved slightly.

Do you think he is going to die? What could have happened to him? The female is fine.

Tested water and the water is fine.

Is there any physical damage to the fish?

Are you 100% sure that you have 1 male and 1 female, not two males? How did you sex them?

It could very well be just that dwarf gouramis are not particularly healthy fish, which is why I advised you to go for honey gouramis instead. It is possible that the move or the cupid cichlids stressed him.

Can you isolate him in a hospital tank?

just had a text from my girlfiend, its swimming around!

because the ammonia was 0 before them going in and 0.25 now shall i do a water change tonight or shall i monitor it and see if my filter deals with it and if it doesnt go down by tomorrow then do one tommorow afternoon?

Do a water change tonight. Theres no harm in doing one just to make sure your ammonia stays down. The gourami could have just been made slightly lethargic from a small ammonia spike but a good water change should sort that out.

You should do water change.. looks like your LFS dude was right!

i really thought it would be fine. will test again after work to make sure.

how much shall i change? 40 ltrs?

To get from 0.25 ppm tank water to 0.125 ppm tank water, changing with 0 ppm tap water, you would need to do a 50% water change.. any water change you can do is better than nothing, 40 litres would still do them good.

I'd personally do a 25% water change to make sure that the ammonia level decreases drastically. So around 45 litres would be great if you can do it.

just thought i would say that the high ammonia was a false alarm.

my girlfriend called and told me the tube had gone green so the ammonia was .25, however it had been sitting on top of the tank for over an hour as i had left it there and gone to work. so after 5 mins it was normal but as it was left for a long time it turns green and thats why she thought it was up.

i tested when i got in and its 0

so in future i will not trust what she days lol
