Hi everyone. my partner has a beutiful male and female pearl gourami and the male is puffing his fins and going quite red so he's obviously ready to breed and the female is i think sligtly fatter than usual ( might just be me ) they are both doing lots of tenticle cuddling which is interesting to watch. hav'nt managed a photo as they seem camera shy.

Anyway back to my question, they are living at present in a 60ltr tank with a plec, 4 platys and 4 mollies. tank conditions are great but they might want some privacy, would this be a correct assumption.

now we do have a small spare/hospital tank 10"*6"*6" how does this stand for a temporary tank for them while they have some fun????

Cheers

The Gourami will breed as you probably already know by building a bubble nest. I'm sure that by moving them to new surroundings that they will stop the courting and the male will not begin to make the bubble nest as quickly as you may hope. This may seem a stupid question but has your husband sexed the gourami's properly as I have two males that do move towards each other and project their feelers towards eachother and they have their own territories in the 180L that I have.

Anyway, assuming that they are male and female I would leave them in their original tank, dont move them. Your hospital tank is 6L in size? I wouldn't move the fish into that, the platys and mollys that are in your 60L even require a larger size than that to be honest so even to suggest moving them to the hospital tank to give the gourami's more space isn't an option. When the eggs are deposited in the bubble nest it is always advisable to remove the female from the male but even the hospital tank is too small for her, they need a minimum of about 40L. You may like to invest in a tank divider (about 5 euro/3 pound/6 dollars.)

I think you should just leave it as it is and hope that they get on with it!! :)

Thanks scorphonic, just needed confirmation. thanks for replying.

this may seem stupid, just say if it is. do the fish know if there are predotory fish in the tank that may eat there babies or hunt there fry? and if they do, do they not reproduce because of it.

To be honest with you its not a stupid question at all, I'm sure only a behavoural scientist could tell you the answer to that one! :)

I do know that the male will prevent any fish from going near the nest and is very very territorial. Once the fish hatch he will continue to care for them. Just do a search on google for this: "Gourami breeding behaviour" and chose the link titled: "Gourami Breeding". You can find it here. Its a very useful link!!
