One of my white cloud mountain minnows cant close its mouth! Its lips seem to have gone orange too and its being bullied by my red eye tetras, so now its missing some of its cadual fin :( . Its eyes seem to be further out than normal too and it has a swollen belly.
I noticed this about half an hour after feeding some live bloodworms last night, and just assumed it had eaten too much. But i returned home tonight after being away most of the day and he looks the same as last night, only missing part of his caudal fin(my red eye tetras are picking on him now).

Stats:Ammonia-0ppm
Nitrites-0ppm
Nitrates- In between 0 and 5ppm

Probably totally unrelated but i've been using melafix for the past few days before this because another one of my wcmm's- my oldest(about 4 years old, and has been looking crooked for about a year) has slowly lost all its cadual fin, the melafix wasnt helping though so i think that was just old age and now i cant find him :-( .

I've attached a (bad)picture of him, anyone know what i can do to help him or whats wrong with him? .

Isolate him. do you see any signs of a parasite? i.e worm hanging out of mouth, worm on scales, ect. I'm not sure how a parasite would force him mouth open though :/

I cant really isolate him right this second.....but, i think i may have figured out what it is. A bit of pea  . I look inside his mouth and it looks like he has a bit of green pea stuck in it, i fed them peas about 15mins after i fed the bloodworms, so this is a possibility :/ .

Anyone know how to get a pea out of a fish?

An open mouth can be a sign of something stuck in his mouth or a sore, you will have to remove him, wrap him in a wet clean cloth of tank water, sterlise some tweezers just in case, though the shock of trying to catch him might release the oject, bloodworms can cause the tummy to swell.
In the pic his belly looks sunken in but it could just be the photo.
But with all the other symtoms he has something not right.

Sorry didn't see the last reply.

Thanks :) , though im not too sure about this :/ . Would this stress him too much? Id hate for him to die because of stress  . Should i fill a shallow dish with tank water too and try keep him in that?

Or should i try feed the fish first to see if it will somehow come out then?

You will have to remove the oject it will get infected and could cause septicemia.

Ok i'll try feeding a little flakes, then if that doesnt work ill add some stress coat to dish with tank water and wrap something soaked in that around him...would kitchen roll be ok? I have a towel thats pretty clean too if thats what i should use..

No it has to be a cloth, kitchen paper sticks to there slime coat, noticed that as i wrap dead fish in them to bury in garden.

Look under fish swimming with mouth open.

Ok thanks, dont have any oil of cloves though :/ . This could be tricky. Thats how i bury fish too, never noticed that though, twas a close one  .

Really not looking foward to this, but here goes....

I wrap mine in toilet papar, but you can still get fluffy bits of kitchen papar.
Sorry i know it will be hard on a small fish, but sometimes the stress makes them release it.
It got to be removed before infection sets in.

There is no way its coming out :( . He's just very stressed now and floating by the top, i tried to grab it with the tweezers but it impossible-its round slippy and if you ever do get it a bit breaks off. I think all i did was mush it up, his mouth is wider now :-( . Im terrible at this :( . Ive put lots of stress coat in the water and i'll continue dosing melafix :( . I just hope ive not made it worse :shout: .

Thanks for all the help though, im just useless...
