I have taken an off-the-shelf Fluval tank and I used all stuff intended for freshwater, that is gravel and the like. The only difference is that I add 10 grams marine salt per liter to get low-end brackish water of SG 1.005.

I had the impression that cycling the tank took somewhat longer, but as a beginner I might not really be able to judge this.

My livestock is freshwater that also lives in brackish water, but I acclimatised them as normal, about 15 minutes or so, and all are happy and healthy. I try to maintain a ph of 7.7 (min 7.5, max 7.9).

Only the Java fern was constantly dying while simultaneously producing new leaves over two months and this has stopped now. The Java moss was fine from the beginning.
